Am I the only one who thinks this was dumb?
I love movies about airplane disasters: Airport, Zero Hour, Entebbe, etc. And I like good comedy: Robin Williams, Jonathan Winters, etc. I just thought Airplane was cheap laughs, low quality stuff.

shareThat's your opinion and I am sure it is shared by others.
Airplane! virtually created a new comedy genre, so it may seem (or be ) cliched now.

It's supposed to be dumb.
shareDumb is okay, just not painfully unfunny.
I used to be a flight attendant and I remember pilots telling me how hilarious they thought this film was. I'd smile and try to be tactful. I thought it was the stupidest and most UNFUNNY movie ever. The "jokes" were a groan and beyond juvenile. (or so I thought)
Humor is subjective. And subjectively speaking, I've had menstrual cramps that were funnier than this movie.
So it's not just me. Yes, there is a lot of peer pressure when everyone says it's "hilarious" to not contradict them or even doubt yourself, i.e. am I missing something they see that I don't? First a lot of the jokes were just ripoffs of Zero Hour and Airport, and stuff like the guy hanging himself, talking jive, the blowup doll. I mean really, can you get any more cheap? But yes, if you question its supposed hilarity everyone hates you.
shareAdam60z- Sometimes if you don't find something "hilarious", people take it personally. Many years ago I was going to have a sleepover at my cousin's house. And we usually laughed at the same things. Not this time!
She and her friends had a comedy album that they wanted me to listen to. It was Cheech and Chong. At the time I just didn't "get" druggie humor. I sat stone faced listening to this supposedly funny album. They kept getting angrier and angrier because I wasn't laughing. I just thought it was stupid.
My cousin was so mad at me even though I told her that I didn't think it was funny. Humor is so subjective.

Now that's funny! That scenario, not Cheech and Chong...even though I like them.
shareI think it is an hilarious film, one of the funniest ever. But it's subjective.
shareWe men are juvenile by nature. The truth is we never really mature much past eleven; we just put on an act. My experience has been that pilots don't make it much past nine. That being said I understand and respect your opinion.
sharekwestmo- Oh boy, we women can be just as juvenile! I used to love The Three Stooges when I was a kid. I can still laugh at some of their antics. I see a pie throwing scene and I still laugh.
I worked with some pilots who were very nice and mature. But some, as you said, didn't make it past nine. Two pilots that I worked with at my first airline job (it was a small, commuter airline) dubbed themselves "Lewd and Lascivious". They'd paste pictures from Playboy magazine in the cockpit to try and get a rise out of me. I just thought they were children. Some other pilots also did things that in this day of political correctness would be dubbed "sexual harassment". But I never reported any of them. I just thought that their behavior was moronic.
Maybe.
shareWe’re all counting on you. Good luck.
shareI never understand this kind of criticism.
You like what you like, and vice versa. If many others like a film you don't, who cares. Why should that bother you? Why do people seem to get annoyed when they see others praising a movie they don't like?
Works both ways...if people say they hate a movie that i like, I don't question them as to why, or suggest there might be something wrong with them.
We all have different opinions. If people feel the need to post as to why others don't share the same opinions as them, they surely have issues or problems with their life
Definitely appreciated by guys more than chicks. That must be what's going on here.
shareIt is dumb
and stop calling me Shirley.
My recollection of Airplane! is a rapid fire delivery of improbably funny responses to the situation. Sure, everyone was supposed to be professional and yet they continue to rattle off all these cleverly dumb responses, and it was funny.
Today, maybe it seems dopey, but back then, it was very new and different.
