Surely, not Shirley!

I wonder why there is spelling 'Shirley' in the line by Dr Rumack when he replies "Don't call me Shirley/Stop calling me Shirley". To me it sounds "Don't call me Surely". Besides, it is more logical and natural in this situation. Or am I deaf? What do you all think?

reply

Ted says "surely". The doctor says "Shirley".

That is all.

Don't forget the 'huh's.

For me, the cockpit skit was much more funnier than the don't call me Shirley skit.

reply

Shirley you can't be serious?

reply

That's HEDLEY!

Ted says "surely", but Dr Rumack hears "Shirley" and thus that's what he says. It's as simple as that.

A stupid wordplay that I don't know how it became so iconic.
I wonder how it was dubbed around the world.
