Why is Humphrey's Nickname 'Humpy?'

I've always wanted to know. In various places in the show, Humphrey is referred to as "Humpy." Not only by Hacker, but also by Sir Arnold and his other colleagues. Why? And what's the joke behind it? I don't get it.
