How old are you?

Just curious - I'm 34 and I remember me watching this as a child ...

reply

15, but I first watched it when I was about 13, I think.

reply

I am 22.

21, so naturally I didn't see it when it was first broadcast. That didn't stop an addiction from forming.

reply

I am 36, and I only started watching this earlier this year. I nearly dismissed it as some kind of boring politically themed sitcom, but then I actually sat down and paid attention to it. I quickly fell in love with it's clever plots and hilariously mind-boggling way of over-complicating a simple statement to get what one wants. I try never to miss an episode!

OK, so what's the speed of dark?

reply

I am from the United States, hence my only discovering this show as of late!

I got into this when I was about 15, in 1998.
I love it even more now; I am 23. I regularly get the DVDs out to re-watch them.
I just fell in love with Sir Humphrey!

Sir Humphrey, played by Nigel Hawthorne, a fine actor- gay as a lot of them are- and who was no sex symbol in anyone's book.
Yes Minister is interesting historically- it was shot in the early 80s but is really about the period just before, even though Hacker is evidently a "soft" Tory, who has no particularly strong views one way or the other. Some of the early episodes are about events of the late 1960s, others in the same season couldn't be set much before 1979 (the visitor in Series 1 episode 2 is a humanised version of Idi Amin, even though they refer to Idi Amin separately in the programme).
In terms of political positioning, Yes Minister is set during the change from Keynesianism (social democracy) to monetarism (Thatcherism) a process which began under Denis Healey's (Labour) chancellorship from the end of 1976, when there was no other option after the disastrous second Wilson government and the IMF imposing harsh conditions on strike-torn and bankrupt Britain. Having said that, Thatcherism was no less strike-torn and miserable for millions of people... 3 million people were unemployed from about 1980 to about 1986 and again between 1990 and 1993.
The series was written by Anthony Jay (a strong Thatcherite) and Jonathan Lynn (a more liberal and comic writer, not a million miles away from the Pythons).
Yes Prime Minister is much more set in the 1980s and much more about Thatcher's government. There are a few throwbacks- in a time of glasnost, there still seems to be a lot about the Soviets. I suppose people saw it as a temporary improvement rather than anything permanent.
BTW, I'm 30. Therefore, I lived under Thatcherism but haven't got any direct knowledge of politics before 1987, only historical.

reply

I was a child during the seventies, but you have described it about right.

While I can't remember specifics, I can remember lots of strikes on the telly, 'cept when the workers at the station went on strike, then all there was were repeats.

In remember my parents having to by candles and lamps so we would have light when the electric was cut to save supplies.

As for Thatcher, now there's profe of the shortness of people memories, she was going to sell half the RN fleet, this gave the Argentina the idea that they could invade the Falklands and we wouldn't or couldn't do anything about it, we did, they lost and Thatcher got in on a wave of patriotism. Before the invasion she was the most unpopular PM for decades, after she was Boudacea and Queen Elizabeth I combined.

I'm 22 and from Hull, England. Joy of joys. I'm a recovering Yes, Ministerholic. I've been into binge watching for several years now and I'm not sure I can stop entirely. The good thing for me is that I don't think I've ever seen an episode of Yes, Prime-Minister so I've still got that to come. Awesome.

reply

I am 28, watched this a year ago and consider it the greatest political comedy of all time.

reply

26. UK.

And I find it hard to believe that it was written before I was in primary school, and not just a few months ago.

John Reid's statements about not having any particular ambition to be Prime Minister are almost word for word what Jim Hacker said in "Party Games".

reply

41. I guess I'm the old-timer so far.

I first started watching it on PBS (in the US) around 1988.

Bought the boxed sets this year. I had gone around 10 years without seeing an episode and couldn't take it any longer. What a joy to rediscover the brilliance of this show.

Same story with another Brit-com, Good Neighbors. Any fans?

Are you going to pull those pistols or whistle "Dixie"?

reply

I'm 21 right now and I saw this series for the first time when I was 16. I loved it then and now that I bought it on DVD I like it even more :)

reply

'Good Neighbors' is actually called the 'Good Life' in the UK, thats probably why you are receiving not many posts. Alternatively you could check their boards.

reply

27 - started watching ten or eleven years ago and still think it's one of the funniest comedies ever made.
