Muriel's adoption

Did the show ever explain why Muriel's birth mother gave her up for adoption? I saw the episode where she came back as a nun and leaving for the Orient wanting to see Muriel one last time, but I didn't catch anything about why she was put up for adoption.

I don't think so. The ironic thing is the lady who played her adoptive mother was a redhead just like Muriel!

I think that the detective they hired explained, Murial's father was killed before he could marry her mother in the war and her parents didn't want her to be an unwed mom so she gave her up to marry someone else later and always prob regretted it.

It has been a long time since I saw the episode where Muriel meets her birth mother.
What I recall is that Muriel knew the woman was from an affluent area, or well-to-do, and Muriel seemed put off to be told that her mother, Ms. Betty Farnsworth, was en-route to the Orient, until she learned it was for Missionary work. The revelation that Betty Farnsworth was now a nun was a shock, to Muriel.

Ms. Farnsworth knew, or seemed to know, she'd spend the rest of her days away from the U.S., so she hoped for that one time to see her only daughter. She would explain, to Muriel, that times were different when Muriel was born, citing why she gave her up for adoption, and that she was glad to know Muriel was happily married, and had three children, as Betty never had any other children. That may have been why she chose to devote her life to serving others.

The scene when Muriel visited Betty, aboard the freighter, was quite touching.

The actress who played Betty Farnsworth, Muriel's mother, was Priscilla Pointer.
Ms. Pointer played many a role as someone's mom, as she was, prior to TCFC, cast as the mother of Cliff and Pam in DALLAS.
In real life, she is the mother of actress Amy Irving. The two of them were cast as mother and daughter in the original film version of CARRIE.

They never explained it, but apparently she didn't want to be a mother.
Just watched it last night and it drew a few tears, must say.
