The way the Japanese Spoke

I found it interesting, particularly if you're not reading the subtitles, what the sound and inflection is like when they talk. The women sound soft and musical, but the men sound very deep and guttural, particularly when talking among soldiers. Sometimes their words sound like darting bullets.

My dad found it funny when Lord Toranaga was doing a big pep-talk speech to his soldiers in one part of the series, the part where he's raising a fan and going "eee--EEEE--eeee!!!" Dad said Toranaga sounded like he was trying to take a dump instead, hehe.

Yes, I've always found it curious when watching Japanese historical movies, particularly older ones, how the men speak with such an artificial deep voice. I am not sure why that is.

reply

I know! And we all know for a fact that not all Japanese men have deep voices, so why would they talk like that?

reply

Just macho style.

reply

😄 yes it sounds sometimes funny..

I have watched a little bit the bonus material of the X Files. I hope that the most of the Japanese women do not speak like the dubbing voice of Dana Scully 🥴

You want bad dubbing, a friend of mine over in Europe wanted to watch that old Czech film "Three Wishes for Cinderella," and the dubbing dept. in her country was so cheap and bad that they had men doing all the translated speaking parts! :O Not to mention the timing wasn't very good either.

reply

Very nice!
I think in Poland it is still the same.
Imagine the same (male) dubbing voice for Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas in, e.g., " Basic instinct"...
