how does it compare with the book?

Is it better or worse than the book?

books are always better than the films and this is no exception. The book gives way more detail in to Japanese culture/politics than was possible in the miniseries. The series was still great, but the book was better.

Watch Forrest Gump then read the book. Same with Jaws.

There might be more details, but in those cases, the movies are DEFINITELY better.

Well, the book is smaller. You can hold it in your hands. The movie has to seen on a television. You need electricity for that.

^ well said. ^

the book and the series are very complementary IMO. you can't watch a book on TV, hence the two shouldn't be compared. they both have their roles and both are superb.

having said that, starting with the series is probably the best choice for most people. the imagery and essential plot will be firmly established in your mind- then you can read the book and fill in levels of detail and background to help flesh the whole thing out. to make it bloom even more fully, one might say.

like i say, the two items work wonderfully well together.

The serie is good, fine -the book is, however, still better.
