Wasn't the music terrible?
I know it was early 80's TV but that main theme was just putrid! It sounded so cheesy. Some of the other score was OK but the opening theme sounded so bad for a series of this proportion.
Shogun (1980) - 7 outta 10 stars

On the contrary, I love this soundtrack from the very first time I saw it and heard it. Bought theLP record back then, and waited many years to buy a CD version. I believe I found it on the website buysoundtrax. com. The track Mario's Theme is my favorite.
shareWow....
What does 80's have to do with anything?
Classical music is timeless.
Are you saying Orchestrad music is "80s" ?
"Wait!" "Worry" "Who Cares?"

I don't mind it, really. The story absorbs me so much that I barely notice the music. But I think the music is ok, not excellent but not terrible.

I agree. The music is bombastic, pompous, not good in the sense of being memorable or orginal, is often intrusive, and sometimes flat out silly.
The banged piano chord when Mariko picks up the tanto was a stand out low point on multiple levels. I realise it is fashionable to think contemporary artists invented sophistication and that all eras previous were marked by an excruciating naivety, but that just isn't so. This was bad stuff and those involved ought to have known better. That they committed to this crap just makes them crap artists, and being from the 80s is no excuse.
Other crap parts were the outdoor sets, particularly the boats, which looked like they were made from cardboard and had sails that had as much life as bedroom curtains.

I think it was a nice music. The only part I didn't like was these " songs" at Mariko's funeral - terrible- but in general nice music .
