Unseen Footage

What we see in "Hollywood" is, of course, the edited footage of interviews with those who were involved with the silents. However, Kevin Brownlow in an interview stated that with Allan Dwan, for example, they used 17 ten minute magazines of film since Dwan had so much to say. We can only imagine what other unseen treasures from these interviews are locked away...

Wow wouldn't be great to hear those excised clips! Finally broke down and paid for the VHS tapes on Amazon (over $150.00) . Those people waiting for the DVD take heart; If my past experience is any gauge, right after I buy something for an exorbitant amount they announce an imminent DVD release. Looks like everyone is still waiting for the Network Co. release (since early 2006). I have been watching clips on You-Tube and remembered how much I loved this series. Do you mind me asking what prompted you to contribute to such an old thread?

I commented because it's a topic that is still relevant for this series is a true classic. I just started viewing "Hollywood" again after not having seen it for many years and what comes through besides the wonderful music, editing and narration is the soulful comments of those who were interviewed, reflecting on a life's work. The complete interviews are a treasure which I hope see the light of day eventually.

The producers had the vision to capture a quickly-fading piece of history which is now entirely gone except for the extant films, they being only a fraction of Hollywood's production in that era.

I, along with many others, would love to see this series out on DVD, apparently something that is not going to happen any time soon.

Cameraman Karl Brown is another one who seemed to have lots of interesting stories from the silent era. I love listening to people who've actually experienced things and learned things through their long lives, as opposed a bunch of sour old curmudgeons who've only developed hatred and closemindedness.
