Yes, It's Even Worse Than You Remember

Wow! I understand they needed to have a smaller budget for this "sequel", but did they have to save money by hiring only the very worst writers in Hollywood? Casting disasters aside, why did they turn the show into a horrible hybrid of CHiPs, The Bionic Woman and, strangely enough, The A-Team?

So you suddenly have the ability to travel through time, huh? Why not go back and seed the technological advancements in Earth's past (and not give up after that one crap attempt involving the Nazis). Better yet, send a lone ship back to Caprica, travel back in time and warn the planet of the Cylon attack - thus negating the reason for the entire show to begin with.

What in the name of Dr. Z were they thinking?

I may not have been as good as the original series but is still better than the Sci-Fi Channel CGI political soap opera of today. The show would have been better without Dr. Zee and the kiddies.

"The show would have been better without Dr. Zee and the kiddies"

Would have, could have, wasn't. What could have been is irrelevant. The show as is was very bad, and yes, JUST AS BAD as the Sci-Fi Channel garbage today. It's ONLY redeeming value is "The Return of Starbuck", which was pretty much a real Battlestar Galactica episode and NOTHING like Galactica 1980's other nine episodes.

G80 is car-crash television, pure and simple. Insultingly dumb, excruciatingly made, written and acted, yet perversely compelling. And while The Return of Starbuck is a good episode, it's by no means a great one. It just happens to be the closest thing to a rose in the cesspool of Galactica 1980.

OMG--all criticisms are correct. I remembered this show as bad, but not THIS bad. I bought it because I loved the original and the new show and felt this would complete the collection. I may use these two disks as coasters. I watched the first episode until Robert Reed made his entrance, but could go no further.

I know the Starbuck episode is good. Are any of the others worth watching?

Nope. And that is not a joke.

You got that right. Remember the episode where all the kids can run, jump, do all that stuff better than the Earthlings because of the higher gravity on Galactica? Then why couldn't Troy and....Barry Van Dyke's character do all that??? Wow, talk about an oversight. Just one example of a terrible series that didn't put much effort into quality stories.

Thanks to IMDB having eps we can watch I was able to view an ep last night!

Yes, it was that bad, but what it retained from the original was the fun!

I enjoy the new BG in Name Only because of the deep stories and characters. But as much as I enjoy the newest incarnation it lacks fun!

Yeah, the writing of Galactica 1980 was crap, hands down. But at least the fun elements of the original were retained. Fun that is lacking in a lot of (non-comedy) shows today.

Well, actually it isn't worse than I remember because I seem to have blocked it from my memory! I watched the original show when I was 8/9 and loved it, then when I knew of the new show being made I had this urge to watch the old one again and yes, times change and all of that but I still liked it. Then watched this "thing" and I couldn't believe how bad it was, at first I was even sure it hadn't been aired in my country back then but a friend about my age remembers it, so the only explanation I can find is that I actually forgot about it. And it's no wonder, Galactica 1980 is excruciatingly terrible.

I have to disagree.

Personally, Ive always found Galactica 1980 to be enjoyable. When the original was shown here in Australia in late 1979 I fell in love with the show, even collecting the complete collector cards (which I still have mint) and toys... Then in mid 1980 this show came on and I really enjoyed it. I thought it was awsome... Later I thought that being a kid at the time may have warped my thoughts of the show... So I bought a bootleg, and really liked it still, so, when it became available I bought the studio version on DVD. Okay, so it isnt as good as the original, but its still enjoyable as a bit of mindless fun, and its a damn sight better than the updated version recently produced.

Galactica 1980 had some good and some bad, but overall it could have been better. The Return of Starbuck and The Night the Cylons Landed 2 parter were the best of the 10 epiosdes. It seemed like all the other 7 episodes had some kind of left wing crap preachy message about pollution or nuclear weapons. I loved the leads, Kent Mccord & Barry Van Dyke. It was nice to see Boomer and Adama. The kids were not needed. The Starbuck episode did not mention Apollo which ticked me off. Dr. Zee was terrible. Almost no cylons was a huge mistake. Having Richard Lynch on the show was a stroke of genius. Heis the best tv bad guy of all time. Overall it does not come close to the original, tied as my favorite sci-fi show with The Original Star Trek.

This episode was made entirely of already shown footage or Deleted Scenes. The space battle footage was from "The Young Lords" and everything else was from footage already produced while the original series was on.

Dirk Benedict never returned for another episode and that is incorrect.

With the exception of Lorne Greene and Herbert Jefferson Jr nobody from the original series returned.

Would you blame them??
