I thought he was a part-time featured player, similar to the "minor" cast members on SNL...
Andy Kaufman was in one episode, and in the middle of a sketch, he just got up and walked out. The other actors in the sketch did a good job trying to improvise their way through the rest of the sketch. It was mentioned in the Andy Kaufman movie Man On The Moon.
