The reason Fridays isn't on DVD - I've found it!

http://www.tvparty.com/80fridays4.html

Turns out they need Michael Richards' permission! Somebody write him!

reply

i just read that myself. i am very unhappy now.

reply

Yeah this blows. I had always assumed it was getting clearance from all the music acts (which held up Heavy Metal's DVD release for years). I loved the show when it was on, but seeing people like the Plasmatics, or the Busboys, or Split Enz was the main reason I tuned in. Remember this was before MTV.

reply

It really wasn't before MTV, but your point is a good one

Yep! Fridays was very much before MTV. I remember that DEVO was on the show in support of the New Traditionalists album. They performed the songs while walking on treadmills and I believe they were also on platforms about 10 feet above the stage. I was 13 at the time so my memory maybe a bit clouded. qxyz, how much is the cost of your DVD set?

reply

Fridays aired from 1980 to 1982. MTV debuted in August of 1981, but it wasn't very common to have cable T.V. yet.

"Stop your job! Look at the insensitive man!"

reply

Again, 1980 is before 1981...so, yes, Fridays was before MTV by about a year. And Al Jarreau's performances were what sold me on the show, even though I was a dedicated Andy Kaufman fan well before that time.

reply

Yeah, I totally remember Friday's being funnier than SNL. I am also pissed that Michael Richards is holding up the release of this show. He must have a ton of money now after doing all those years of Seinfeld. What's the downside for him? His selfishness is preventing us from great TV moments, like Mark Blankfield's drug-addled pharmacist!

reply

Frankly, I think Richards' Battle Boy scenes were the best. Hiding in his plywood covered hole in his back yard... nailing green army men to the wall, setting fire to his little sister's Barbie Corvette... all to the lilting tune "Come play with me..."

Funnier than SNL! I wish I had kept those old video casettes!

reply

They had better do something soon as the show is only remembered by those old enough to see it back in the day. Richards better give in. He should be happy that people remember him from something OTHER than Seinfeld. It would be good for his career and "Fridays" fans where the show is but a memory, and a fading one at that!

reply

Fridays was way way better than SNL.The music guests were very varied that made the show very interesting, lets face it there wasnt much else on tv back then on friday nights.ABC should absolutely without a doubt release the whole series and make a whole lot of people happy.Fridays aired during my teen years and i'm sure i would remember every sketch once i started watching them again because i don't think i ever missed an episode. So let's do all we can to get this great show on dvd.

At this point in Michael Richards' career this would be prudent move. After his recent fall from grace this would restore some of his image. His are the skits I want to see again - the ganja chef with the dancing chicken - I remember laughing so hard I thought I was going to die because I couldn't breathe! I'd love my 16 year old son, who's currently into Seinfeld, to see this show. If you have a Netflix account, go request it be added to their rentals. I've already done it. Maybe he would respond to Netflix's request.

reply

You can't request it be added to Netflix until it shows up on home video first. A better place to go is www.tvshowsonDVD.com.

I was getting the cornish game hens ready to bake on Thanksgiving, and it reminded me of Bruce Mahler's sketches about the piano-playing guy with a chicken on one hand. It's a vague memory, but I remember (I think) that he would put a bow tie on the chicken and maybe dress it up, twirling the bird while his hand is inside the body cavity (thank goodness the chicken was dead), all the while playing the piano and singing.

When the hell is somebody going to release "Jekyll and Hyde...Together Again" on DVD???

reply

The world is expanding.

reply

They did release a few of the Michael Richards' scenes on one of the seasons of Seinfeld on DVD.

reply

Great memories from my childhood with this show. Saw it when it originally aired.
I used to re-enact so many of the skits with my friends. I really really miss this show.

Come on Michael...let em release the thing! READ THIS PLEASE: We're all waiting to buy the damn thing. The funny fact is bootlegs are available all over the net (sure, crap quality, but it's there) so people are having to give their money to some DVD copying schmuck bootlegger when the real talent behind the show gets absolutely nothing. Hell, open a ebay account and sell the show yourself! Make the money. Seinfeld on DVD is done. Time to move to the next thing. ...

FRIDAYS!!! NOW! NOW! NOW!!!!!

(thank you) Hee.

Love love loved Fridays. I had tapes of some of their best shows that are erased or no longer playable and would hope they release the shows on DVD. There is a market for them.

reply

I went to Wikipedia and looked up Fridays and you are exactly right. They need Michael Richards' permission.

From Wikipedia:

'DVD release and revival possibilities
No DVDs have been released yet from the series, reportedly because Richards is the only cast member who has the right to approve any home video releases from the series written into his contract. To date, he has not signed off on a DVD release, though some clips of Richards and Larry David on Fridays appear on the Seinfeld Season 3 and 5 DVD's.

Episodes of Fridays edited to a sixty minute length appeared in syndication and on the USA Network later in the 1980s, but the series has not been aired since then.

No reunion of the Fridays cast has ever occurred. The closest thing to a reunion to date was the 1998 series finale of Seinfeld in which Richards, Chartoff, Mahler and Burrell all appeared, and which was written by David.'

larry david is ashamed of this show. with good reason

Shout Factory announced plans to release both seasons of the show on DVD in 2013. In August 2013, after missing their original release date, Shout Factory released a five disc best of collection featuring highlights of 16 episodes from seasons one through three, not complete episodes.

reply

It's also being shown on Shout Factories app on Roku. Boomtown Rats are playing I Don't Like Mondays right now.

Life is pain. Anyone who says differently is selling something.

reply

I have a couple from the original ABC broadcasts.
