'The band's really cooking today!'

One bit I remember was Dave would introduce the band by saying "the band's really cooking today," and they would cut to the band and the leader was cooking food on a barbeque. They did it for a few days and no one laughed (I was laughing out loud at home). So Dave got Henny Youngman on the phone, explained the bit to him and asked him why no one was laughing. His response -- "It isn't funny."

This was a great show, but Dave was never meant for morning broadcasting. He obviously found his place (and his audience) on late night.
