Cute show, too many holes in the premise

I know this this show has a premise you shouldn't spend too much time thinking about, but if Kip and Henry can afford to buy women's clothes, why don't they apply that money towards their rent?

Also, Kip and Henry should make decent incomes working in advertising. If they can't even afford an apartment, they should find a company that pays a living wage, or move out of pricy Manhattan and commute from New Jersey or Long Island.

Now, maybe things were different then, but can an apartment building get away with only renting apartments to women, or is that considered disrimination? And since it looked like a decent building, why was the rent so cheap there? And if one of the women in the building got married, would she be evicted?

reply

Well, if you actually watched the pilot episode, you'd know that the clothes were provided by the client they were advertising. Plus, it was never made clear if they actually lived in Manhattan or not. Also, the point of the building was to provide women cheap housing. In those days, it wasn't looked at as discrimination. It was looked at as safe housing for women. Free of men. Of course, today you couldn't get away with that.

Actually there are places where just women live cheaply. You can get a room. It's not permanent but if you are going through hard times you can go there (I don't mean a shelter).

Although those places are really rare. I live in the northeast coast and other than shelters, I have not been able to find any cheap housing for women specifically.

lol, is someone really putting this much thought in to this???

Holes, schmoles... who cares?!

It was a funny show, and that's what counts.

My guess is that they chose to stay in Manhatten because that's where the action is. They wanted to be able to entertain clients late at night if they needed to, and not worry about a long commute back to their house. Also, women only apartments still exist in New York, which I was surprised to find out.

I haven't seen an episode of Bosom Buddies in at least 25 years, but I thought the point of living in the women's apartment was so that they could meet and get to know the hot chicks living there, and try to score later once they were out of drag.

My God people, the premise of the show was explained in detail during the opening credits of every episode!!!! What, do you want a freakin' transcript??

I agree that it is kind of useless to analyze the premise of a sitcom, especially one from the 80's. However wasn't a bigger reason for them staying there was because Kip wanted to be near Sonny and Henry was using the experience to write a book? Honestly I thought the show did better when they didn't deal with the theme of them dressing as women and instead just used the comedy of the actors, rather than the comedy of the situation/theme. Back then you had to have a 'catch' for the show. Back then you couldn't have a show like Friends or even Law & Order. "Yeah, Yeah it's a bunch of friends that live in New York, but what's the gimmick?" "Okay it's a show about police detectives solving crimes, but what do they have some kind of whacky day job?"

The cheap rent was only one of the reasons why they lived there, but it wasn't the main reason. And plus it explained in one episode that they were basically living on one salary, because the advertising company wouldn't hire Henry unless Kip split his own salary with him.

And if you'll recall, they actually did quit that company to start their own.

Most tv shows and movies are fiction and fantasy. They're for entertainment purposes only, the stories don't have to make sense. Even when true stories are being told, Hollywood takes creative liberties with them.
Some shows/movies do try to get as close to reality as possible.

We need to just relax and let our minds be taken away from real life situations for a bit. If we can unwind and laugh, then perhaps we wouldn't get so stressed out and unhappy.

A similar premise in Three's Company where the guy had to pretend to be gay to fool the landlord. It's just that - a premise for a situation comedy. Without the premise, there'd be no situation and no comedy. How many times did these shows use the "misheard a remark while eavesdropping" device? Sitcoms were clunky back then.

"Back then"? Have you seen "Dr. Ken"? I tried it because I enjoyed the actor on "Community", but wow is it awful. And it's a hit!
