Outdoor New York scenes filmed in LA?

Since I live in New York, I was always puzzled by how I never recognized any of the external scenes from this show. Apparently they were all filmed in Los Angeles. What was the point, they couldn't spend a couple of days in Manhattan to do external shots like other shows do? Perhaps they were on a very low budget? Even so, why couldn't they work at an ad agency in LA then?

The fact that you can actually see palm trees in several of the shots makes it all the more pathetic, lol. I used to assume it was Central Park they were jogging in, but through the years, and with the advancement of technology(DVD), it's pretty easy to make out the palm trees.

It seems that a few Paramount shows from that time period did not go to the trouble of doing locationg shooting, especially Miller-Boyett shows("Happy Days", "Laverne & Shirley to name a couple).

As to why they didn't have it set in LA, I suppose Miller-Boyett figured they could get away with it by using stock footage of New York in some of the opening shots. Why New York? Actually, that's a good question. I guess a lot of series creators have gone with the assumption that we want to see things taking place in locations other than LA. Think how boring it would be if everything took place in LA.. We want to think a series could take place right in our backyard. Actually, "Family Ties"(another Paramount show) was supposed to take place in my hometown, Columbus, OH, but I don't believe we ever see one establishing shot of Columbus, not even stock footage.

and to touch on another question, I do think "Bosom Buddies" was on a tight budget. For instance, they had their high school reunion take place at the Susan B. Anthony.. wtf? Kip and Henry were from the Cleveland area of Ohio, and obviously weren't all that popular with their class; why would the reunion take place in another state where they happened to be living?? It just seems like they avoided leaving the "Susan B." and "60 Seconds Street" sets whenever they possibly could.

Wow you are so right! I just watched the reunion episode and didn't even recognize that it was weird that it would be in nyc when they grew up in Ohio! Good catch
