Banned in Jackson, MS.

I remember when NBC affiliate WLBT would not air this and the mayor of Jackson called it a "slap in the face" to the state and it was filmed in Natchez, MS.

It didn't air in Jackson, MS, because a pregnant black woman was shot and killed by police for carrying a gun, and I think it was also believed she had been drinking.

The feeling was it would 'rile up black people' to then have to contend with this slave era program.

Instead, we got some Katherine Hepburn-Cary Grant movies. Don't recall which ones.

Beulah Land aired months later during the day on the weekends and my brother watched some of it and said it aired with the primetime commercials it would have had from earlier intact.

I was glad our cable company at the time had WDAM channel 7 in Hattiesburg. The Jackson channels were VERY picky about what we could or couldn't see, like the GMs were acting like they are our mommy and daddy. I believe if you don't want to watch it, then TURN THE !@##$$ CHANNEL!

More than likely it could have aired in Jackson with not a single solitary problem, but just as today, we have to contend with "this might upset some people, so let's not refer to it".

I don't think anybody would have cared to bother watching this had it aired back then.
