Criterion has apparently been working on a special edition release that should come out sometime this year...god bless criterion! Although I haven't had the privilege of seeing this monster yet, I can't wait.

That is not true. The Fassbinder Foundation has been restoring Berlin Alexanderplatz for a long while now, expecting to finish in 2006. Criterion has nothing to do with it, they just have been trying to talk the Fassbinder Foundation into letting them put it out on DVD, that's all, only talking.

Oh yes you would. Absolutely agree with you couzijn. I saw it over a decade ago in Calcutta, India in the German Cultural Center (they spread it over 5 days :-)) & I still remember scenes. It has an impact waaay more powerful than a 90 minute will-o-the-wisp ...

I know, and I was just wondering if it was really God that was linking this because never in my life would I have imagined that out there, somewhere in this world, there existed poor quality bootlegs and that I, in the face of the current restoration/DVD news, could buy them. It's truly amazing.
