Bare bones DVD release

Like most fans of this movie, I looked forward to the DVD release of Yanks in 2005. However, the only thing good about it was the low price, but I think I know why it sold for under $10. There are no extras or special features, no subtitles nor even any closed-captioning! I would have gladly paid more for a product with better packaging and features.

Maybe the much-rumored 165-minute director's cut will be released soon, but I'm not holding my breath! With John Schlesinger's death in 2003, we may have to wait another 25 (or more) years for that to become available, if it even exists.

Has it been said what was taken out? At 2'19", it seems to run nicely and it doesn't feel like anything is lacking.

I think he means there's no additional features period. It's the VHS film on a disc. That doesn't happen often these days.

"Mr. Willoughby, you are not welcome here."

There is a 165-minute version of this film somewhere. It was shown in England upon the film's initial release; it's also known as The Director's Cut. In my opinion, the 138-minute version of the film is very chopped up, scenes are truncated, and the film is damaged by the cuts. The story line featuring Vanessa Redgrave and William Devane suffers the most from the cuts. The movie is second rate when, I suspect, the 165-minute version would elevate it first-class standing.
