Martin Smith

The boy who played Lisa Eichorn's brother Jeff,is shown on the imdb as dying of AIDS in 1994.Does anyone know if this is true? The reason for my doubt is that they show his date of birth as 1957,which means he would have been about 21 when it was filmed.Surely he couldn't have been more than 13.Have they mixed him up with another actor of the same name,as they have done before with other people.

reply

Yes, they have mixed him up with another actor of the same name. This Martin Smith could not have been any more than 11/12 years old, which means he was born in about 1968. Unless it is a typo and it is meant to be 1967 and not 1957.

I thought Geoff was Vanessa Redgrave's son in the film? Which would put him around the correct age then.

reply

No Geoff was the brother of Lisa Eichorn in the film, the character you are thinking of was called Tim.

reply

Yes, and Simon Harrison (grandson of Rex Harrison) who played Tim is alive and well and still acting.

Interesting that he was the grandson of Rex Harrison - as Harrison's fourth wife was Rachel Roberts who played Clarrie Moreton - Jean's mother.

She was divorced from Harrison in 1971 and committed suicide in 1980, the year after the film's release.

I was wondering the exact same thing. The little boy in the movie looks to be around 8 or 9 at the most. When I tried searching online for Martin Smith, the same bio comes up with date of birth of 1957 and dying of AIDS in 1994. It has to be a typo or a name mix up. I am curious to find out if in fact he did die or if he's still acting. If anyone knows, please let us know. Thanks

I haven't been able to find out any more, since my original post. But if the Martin Smith who died was born in 1957,then it is not the one who was in 'Yanks'

reply

It could be a typo, and should be 1967 and not 1957. That would make Martin Smith 12 years old when Yanks was made. The actor who played Geoff could have been 12 years old, although the character was meant to be about 9 or 10 years old.

reply

Martin Smith was indeed 21 at time of filming he later did a stint in Crossroads and a lot of Theatre inclu The Lead in Lloyd Webber Phantom of The Opera before dying in 94.

reply

I'm sorry to contradict you,but the Martin Smith who was in Yanks was at the most 13 years old when he made the film. There is no way that he was 21.Have you seen the film,if not watch it and you will see what i mean.

reply

I have been checking on Martin Smith in Phantom and Crossroads, and found an obituary site for Crossroads. There is a photo of Martin Smith, and it is not the same person as the one from Yanks.I thought so as the age was not right.I will try and amend the imdb on this.
Also the dead Martin was Scottish, whereas the Yanks Martin was just a local lad from Lancahire.

reply

Further to my previous posts,i have been doing a bit of investigation into Martin Smith. The actor who was in Crossroads has a photo on a Crossroads site, and it is definitely not the same actor who was in Yanks.Furthermore the Crossroads actor was Scottish, whereas the actor in Yanks was from the Lancashire area, and was picked locally to play the part.I will send the imdb an amendment and hopefully they will put it right.

reply

The imdb have accepted my amendment,so the 2 Martin Smiths should not be confused with each other now.

Glad to hear the gentleman in Yanks is still with us...altho sorry the other is not, even tho I don't know who he was...

reply

I knew the person you are talking about, his real name is Mark Smith he had to change it to Martin for the film since there was already an actor called Mark Smith. He only made this film then packed in with acting, I worked with him in a warehouse, when he left there he then went to drive passenger buses in West Yorkshire he is still alive and well :-)

reply

Thanks a lot for the update on Martin/Mark.Glad that you are able to confirm that he is alive and well.
