Why the nuke power plant?

Does anyone out there have any idea why the producers and director deliberately included shots with a modern-day nuclear power plant prominently in the background? It seems that they sweated blood to get everything else in this movie authentic to the World War II time period, and then stuck in those shots as some kind of in-your-face message. If they did, I didn't understand the message!

It wasn't a nuclear power plant at all! In fact, I think you'll find they are cooling towers for a coal-fired power station, which did exist then.

...if it even looks like a nuclear power plant? It's a distraction. I remember everyone in the theater I was in thoguht that's what is was and people started laughing during what was supposed to be an idyllic love scene. When you are making a movie you want the audience thinking aobut your story, not Three Mile Island.

The movie was filmed in the UK. These coal burning plants are common in the area and no one there would think this plant was nuclear. I thought it was a nuclear plant too at first and couldn't believe the oversight of the movies producers. Just goes to show you the lack of worldly knowledge us "Yanks" have!

...to a modern, American audience, you've to to take into account their likely reactions. You can't blame the audience for a likely misinterpretation. You've got to avoid the problem to begin with.

You're right!! People are clearly stupid and need to be spoon fed every detail. There should have been a subtitle that said not a nuclear power plant.

C'mon everyone in the theatre laughed? You remember that from 30 years ago?

They are not nuke towers. Someone needs to correct the "goofs" section. As soon as I saw the towers, I knew what they were despite being under 50 and having nver lived in the UK. I have, unlike other posters, seen pictures from countries outside of North America. I didn't think audiences were THAT unsofisticated!

They --whatever they were-- are in three scenes. I've never seen a 1943 photo with anything like them in it. Never, anyplace in Europe or NA.

"Mr. Willoughby, you are not welcome here."

I thought the same thing ... what are those nuclear cooling towers doing in this film ... but then ask yourself would the Producers and Directors be so sloppy. That answer is obvious.

Much of this film was filmed in greater Manchester and Chesire. In Manchester there is a coal power plat called Agecroft that opened in 1925. At some point Agecroft had 4 cooling towers. This leads me to believe that in 1944 you could find towers like this in England and they were not nuclear.
