Herzog's knowledge of Berg's Wozzeck?

Does anyone know how much is based on the opera vs the original play? Herzog must've been aware of Berg's masterpiece, right? It's curious to me that he used none of Berg's music.

Good film overall, elevated by Kinski's superb performance.

It's no coincidence that the targets are shaped like single people and not couples.
