Scrupulosity

Having personally witnessed those with the mental illness of severe religious fear and belief systems called scrupulosity, which is nearly incurable, I did view this movie in that light and felt only sadness yet intense interest in the many misguided characters.

It is one of the most cruel forms of OCD and the dear ones I have met suffering from it can only be pitied. I know this behavior has long ties to Southern preaching, but I do think mental illness could be seen in the behaviors of this movie. I found this movie to be surprisingly deep and satisfying.
