Dec '11, just watched movie, disgusted

"Pedophilia Justification" would have been a better title. Nothing to else to watch, I chose a movie that lists a Peter Fonda movie. I watch it. I am disgusted. I bet this movie has a large market (I shudder to think). And it's legal? Yeah, indie artsy. I hope I don't know anyone that this is their favorite movie.

This is really disturbing!

I haven't seen this movie. What exactly is "paedophilic" about it? Does Peter Fonda and Brooke Shields have sex?

reply

No sex or nudity in the film. However several adult characters clearly have some lusty thoughts about Brooke's character, who is supposed to be 13 1/2 years old. Also at the end Brooke and Fonda's characters drive off into the sunset together with the suggestion that they will be romantically involved.

reply

that's not true. they never get romantically involved and after she tells him she wants him in a relationship he says to her I'm too old for you. exactly i thought that was so inappropriate how a guy at the bar wants to have sex with her and how she was like a prostitute and how that one guy later on says something to her and she calls him a pervert.

reply

I just saw the end of this movie and noticed Brooke Shields looking very young and a bunch of men taking pictures of her and then taking off in a car with Peter Fonda. I suspected some sort of pedophile movie type. I come to the IMDB forums to
see what's been said about it and found your post to which I sympathize as I have been noticing more this type of movies been shown. I usually only watch action an horror movies the only way I find out about these pedo movies is when they show on
tv. I can refer to a young girl as pretty and cute and that's all. It makes me puke how these older men can't think any more with their upper head than with the lower and don't care about destroying a young girls (or boys)innocence just to satisfy their own perverted needs. I don't have kids and I'm a 41yo male and the more I see this kind of things the less I want to bring one into this world.

Jigs: Fear that someday your son or daughter will be sexually molested: that's a great reason for never having a child. Lucky for the human race most people don't agree with you.

reply

"pedophilia"

No.

None of you seem to know what the word means and no one in North American knows how to pronounce it.

Here's a hint; do you take your child to a PED' ee ah trish an?

reply

As an aside, your little tirade here reminded me of a scene in the show "Trollied", where Margaret is walking in place all over the store because her family bought her a "Paedometer" to track her walking; and she continues to say that after everyone keeps insisting it's a PEDahmeter!

By the way, just as a potential ex-pat, any idea what the rule of thumb is for "meter/metre" I know the latter when referring to the distance, but I'm never sure when it comes to "recording devices" like a pedometer. I'm wanting to ensure I'm not too horrendously American when I make my first visit.

It's me....Bara...it's always bloody Bara!

reply

When you go walking, you OBVIOUSLY use your pee-doh-mee-ter....hilarious.

Anyway, this was an easy, 5-second lookup:

The PED of PEDIATRICIAN, PEDANTIC, PEDAGOGUE and PEDERAST is from Greek paidos (child).

I don't think Brits (or anyone, for that matter) says PEEdantic or PEEdagogue.

reply

I've never been as uncomfortable and disturbed by a movie being so inappropriate in the way it conveys a little girl as a sex object and her being lusted after by men and by her being a like prostitute and property to someone who they can have sex with. and just because underage prostitutes exist doesn't make it alright to portray them in a movie in such an intimate way. i mean my gosh, it gives guys the wrong idea and makes them even more perverted and wrong.

reply

There is nothing wrong with adult men seeing 12 year old girls as attractive and sexy. 12 year old girls often want to be seen as attractive and sexy.

The problem is when adult men act on those feelings. Then they are breaking the law.

For most of human history, 12 year olds were sexually active and traditionally seen as ready to have babies. As a matter of fact, in many parts of the world, 12 year olds are allowed to have sex and make babies.

I agree in first world countries, 12 year olds need to be protected by law from being used for sex by adults. Because often they are not mature enough to handle dealing with an adult as a lover. But being seen as attractive, and being involved in a romantic or sexual relationship, are two different things.

reply

exactly. I mean let's be real here. it's not realistic for an adult man to have sex with a 12, 13, 14, or 15 year old girl. it's not right or moral or ethical. and you should as an adult man go by what feels right and wrong. and if having sex or being romantic and physically or mentally or emotionally connecting with a 12, 13, 14, or 15 year old girl feels wrong then you should go with your feeling. it shouldn't ever feel right and if it does then there is something wrong mentally or emotionally with you. so, don't do it. if you don't feel it's wrong mentally then check with America's way of dealing with this.

a girl 12, 13, 14, or 15 can't deal emotionally with having sex or being romantic, or physically or mentally or emotionally connecting with an adult man. that's why what mary kay letornou, the school teacher did with that 12 year old boy was reprehensible and completely evil, and completely unacceptable lawfully, morally, and ethically.

reply

I don't understand Luke. If you agree then did you say this;

For the record, Brooke remained a virgin until the age of 21, a fact that she now regrets, (but probably not as much as her former boyfriends.)

reply

lol to the former boyfriends joke. that was so funny. exactly, can you imagine having Brooke as your girlfriend when she was about 16 or heck 13 or 14 years old? oh my gosh. she is the ultimate picture of beauty. man, i would be banging my head against a wall trying to have sex with her at every opportunity and really trying to get her to have sex with me. why did she regret losing her virginity when she did?

reply

Please cite any scene in the movie that showed anything remotely resembling "child molestation".

You can't, can you? In fact, I'd bet you never saw the movie, and are just trolling here.

Peter Fonda's character treated Brooke's character as a father figure to her, nothing more. Shields' character was "in love" with him as a 13-year-old often will be with an older man, especially one who treats her with respect (even if that respect is hidden in sarcasm and feigned annoyance). He never showed any sexual interest in her.

I feel sorry for people who are "disgusted" or see "pedophilia" in this movie. They obviously have issues of their own they need to address before attacking a movie like this.

reply

no. i kept thinking about how inappropriate this movie is in 1. how she was portrayed as like a prostitute 2. in how that guy wanted to have sex with her after she was peter fonda's property. 3. how she was property to him. 4. how that one guy made a comment to her later on and she said something like you are a pervert. 5. how he told her I'm too old for you after she wanted to have a relationship with peter fonda's character. it's like of course you are too old for her. this whole movie felt inappropriate and even the first shot was of her looking in a mirror, trying to look good and like a woman. this whole movie gives guys the wrong idea that it is ok to have sex with a 13 or 14 year old girl. I've never been as uncomfortable or disturbed by a movie portraying a Lolita girl in a movie before.

Marriage in the 1950s when this movie was set, was not delayed until 20s or 30s like it is now. Let alone the ORIGINAL Gold Rush for that matter. For one thing, life expectancy was much less than it is now. Teen marriage was very common, and you can even find newspaper ads from the early 1900s referring to young girls turning in their school books for kitchen implements.

reply

Many 13-year-olds are having sex, I really don't see how it's worse when it's with someone mature. Pedophilia is sex with babies, which Brooke shields clearly is not

reply

[deleted]

There was nothing disgusting in this cute, very innocent movie. Brooke was a beautiful kid being protected and taught about life by an older brother figure. People read their own prejudices into most all of brooke's earliest films its sad.

reply

you're wrong about that. Pedophilia is having sex with kids who are 12 years old not babies. and girls who have sex at 13 or 14 years old with men are scarred permanently and never recover from the trauma put on them by that.

reply

You are wrong Luke. Pedophilia is having sex with pre-pubescent children. Since Brooke's character in the movie was 12, she was already experiencing puberty. So, it can't be pedophilia.

It could be child molestation if she doesn't consent. It could be statutory rape if she does. But it can't be pedophilia.

reply

you are wrong movieliker1. Pedophilia is having sex with pre-pubescent children which is what Brooke's character was. 12 years old is pre-pubescent. 13 and 12 and a half years old is pubescent.

reply

Sorry Luke, look it up. Girls start puberty between the ages of 8 and 12.

reply

sorry movieliker1, look it up. Girls don't start puberty until 12 1/2 years old. when did you start puberty?

reply

I just Googled, "what age do girls start puberty", and this is what I got;

On average, girls start puberty between the ages of 9 and 14. But some will start to develop breasts or pubic hair by age 8, and a small number will start to mature before age 7. The technical term for this is precocious puberty. Girls are five times more likely than boys to develop precocious puberty.

Besides, all girls start at different times. You didn't really think all girls started puberty at exactly twelve and a half did you?

Where are you getting your information?

reply

the problem with that theory is then guys who have sex with girls 9 to 12 could say that she is a pubescent girl and then the guy would not be labeled a pedophile even though they are. and also the problem with that is then guys could claim that having sex with a girl 9 to 12 is fine because she is pubescent when actually it's completely unacceptable and not right at all.

reply

I don't know where you live Luke but that defense wouldn't work in the United States.

It is against the law for any adult to have sex with any child under the age of 17 inclusively. Once they have broken the law, it is just a matter of semantics what they are guilty of. If they have had sexual relations with anyone without consent, they are guilty of molestation or rape. If they have had sexual relations with a person under 17 without the victim's consent, they are guilty of "child" molestation or "child" rape.. If they have had sex with any person under the age of 17 "with" consent they are guilty of statutory rape.

Pedophilia is not an illegal act. It is a medical term used to describe an adult who is sexually attracted to pre-pubescent children. Acting on that attraction would result in child molestation, child rape or statutory rape of a child. Legally, no one is guilty of pedophilia.

So, if guys have sex with girls 9 to 12 years old, they are criminals guilty of molestation or statutory rape. And they are not pedophiles.

And if guys have sex with girls 9 to 12 years old, it is not fine because it is against the law.

No one can be guilty of pedophilia. Pedophilia is not illegal. Child molestation, child rape and statutory rape are.

Being a pedophile is not illegal. Acting on those desires is illegal. But the resulting crime is not pedophilia. It is either child molestation, child rape or statutory rape of a child. And those are all serious charges.

Being an adult who is sexually attracted to a teenager is not a crime. But acting on that attraction is. It is either molestation or statutory rape. And those are both serious charges.

reply

I didn't say it's fine for an adult man to have sex with a prepubescent or 13, 14, or 15 year old girl, I said the man would say it's fine if they went by your theory which is that 9 to 12 year old girls are pubescent because then they are not pedophiles for having sex with a girl 9 to 12 years old. pedophiles are guys who have sex with prepubescent girls, so girls 12 and under. so, you're wrong about pedophiles only being people who are sexually attracted to pre-pubescent children.

actually it's not a crime in certain states like Washington to have sex with a girl under 17; 16. in some states the age of consent is 16.

reply

I just looked up the definition for pedophilia. And this is what I found;

Pedophilia or paedophilia is a psychiatric disorder in which an adult or older adolescent experiences a primary or exclusive sexual attraction to prepubescent children.(Wikipedia)

reply

You are incorrect.

The age of consent is 16 in Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, Nevada, Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Arkansas, , Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Also District of Columbia.

The age of consent is 17 in Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, Illinois, Missouri and New York.

And 18 in California, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Florida, Tennessee, Delaware and Virginia.

Some states have close in age exemptions and authority figure and other prohibitions.

That's fine Lokisgodhi. That wasn't really the point. Luke thinks a pedophile is any adult who has sex with any person who is not a legal adult.

I didn't want to get too particular. I was trying to explain to Luke in simple and general terms. I figured 17 was a good safe number.

reply

Yeah. The problem is this is a subject people don't react rationally to.

Parents (and other adults) frequently don't really see their teenage children as being grown up and able to make adult decisions about things like sex.

I subbed for junior high, high school, and very occasionally younger back in the 90s, I personally don't see the attraction with teen or preteen girls.

The Sex Pistols' song, Pretty Vacant, sums up girls that age.

reply

I think accusations of "pedophilia" would probably be mostly from middle-aged women who now resent that men find much younger females attractive. Anyway, Brooke, while certainly attractive, is not much of an actress here.

Funny how people see the same things then experience and judge them so differently.

This screenplay seemed to me to be written from a novel that’s mostly from the point of view of a young, fanciful, teenage dreamer and meant for pre-teen to middle teenage girls. I can just imagine such a girl picking up a novel with a story like this with all the magical apparitions and ideas and thinking ( maybe wishing) that all men are attracted to her, but she has her sights on a bad boy (man) that also has a big heart and protects her. And even dreaming of marrying him young or later.

The acting, writing and continuity wasn’t very good, but good enough for the audiences these stories are, have been and will be written for.

Just a sweet little movie with no sex or nudity and an extreme gun battle that doesn’t hit the bad guys enough to kill them (though they are found later strung up and dead) and no bullets hit the hero and heroine. An Indian mystic that gets shot but doesn’t die or bleed.

I sincerely doubt that Henry Fonda, as the old and crotchety prospector, would have anything to do with a movie that was sexually exploitive of Brooke Shields or any young girl. I think the same of Peter Fonda.

As for all the people saying how common May December romances and marriages were, well, I think some more extensive research may be in order. They happened throughout time, but weren’t the norm nor near the average throughout recorded history, from my research.

Not a great movie, but nice fluff for the young girls or women revisiting their dreamy youth. And any other romantic, magical fluff lovers.

reply

This movie was made in a different time when grown men were "allowed" to be attracted to young girls in mainstream movies. Another example is the 1976 Canadian thriller "The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane", which shows 35-year-old Martin Sheen's sexual advances towards 13-year-old Jodie Foster. Brooke Shields also starred in the 1978 film "Pretty Baby", playing a child prostitute whose service is auctioned at a brothel. And of course, she made "The Blue Lagoon", another of her sexually provocative films.

reply

why did you say "allowed?"
