The make up effects were definitely better in this movie, the last 20 minutes or so of Zombi is some of the best in all of sleazy horror cinema.
shareYes, Dawn of the Dead is a better movie story and characterwise but this has better makeup and gory scenes that are a lot more memorable and impactful (particularly the splinter in eye and shark bits).
shareIt is a superior film in terms of makeup yes, the grey face paint doesn't look as impressive as the nasty wounds and decayed skin in this film.
shareI would also add, it's miles ahead in terms of music. The soundtrack of this movie (by Fabio Frizzi) really helps set a great mood, on top of the visuals Fulci throws out. I really enjoy both movies, giving Dawn the edge, but in terms of style this movie wins out. One of my favorite zombie flicks.

shareI agree: DotD is a masterpiece, Zombi may not be a masterpiece but the zombies themselves are masterfully made and the worms coming out of the eye-sockets are a delightful touch of class.
I also don't remember seeing any OBESE zombie in DotD : another wonderful touch of class ! And it makes sense too !
I would assume that fat people would be the first ones to be contaminated: they must look way more yummy for hungry zombies than skinny people, all that good lard to chew on....
Jokes aside, I like both movies.
"Dawn" had a shirtless male zombie shot then fell into the mall fountain. That bit gave me a chuckle. And about the 2 films comparison - "Dawn" was more epic while "Zombi 2" had an abundance of class and style..
