Mary Steenburgen in this movie

So pretty. I remember watching this and Melvin and Howard back in the early 80's on HBO and/or Cinemax and being in love with her. Then there was later on in Gilbert Grape where I still thought she looked great. What did I miss out in between? Anything I should watch?

Nevermind. I just looked at her whole filmography and saw what all she was in since then. Still gorgeous after all these years and she's a year younger than my mom. LOL

I watched this one again shortly after watching Melvin and Howard recently for the first time. I've always liked the obvious chemistry between Steenbergen and McDowell who were married (1980-1990) shortly after TAT came out.

It's a shame she and Malcolm didn't work out. Their scenes in this movie (where they met) have such chemistry. (I understand that right before their first date scene, Malcolm had told Mary he loved her for the first time.)

They also co-starred (though I've never seen it) in the Little Red Riding Hood episode of Faerie Tale Theatre. Mary was an older Red than in most retellings, and Malcolm the wolf. This episode apparently took the "seduction/rape" allegory that's implied in the original story and runs with it as far as a so-called "family show" is able to take it. From what I'm given to understand, Malcolm's portrayal of the wolf is just this side of his Little Alex.

Anyway, if you're interested in other movies Mary's been in--it's interesting to note that Mary was in ANOTHER time-travel romance--in Back To The Future III!

Love Mac & Mary. They made a couple of gorgeous kids too. Charlie's got a new book out. That dude's a trip. Looks dead like his dad too. I met Mary in 1983. And I've just always loved those two so much. Broke my heart when they split. But it's cool that they remain close. Mary always said Malcolm was a great dad.

When Mary did a quirky TV series called Joan of Arcadia, I became rather obsessed with it. I checked it out because I love her so much, but it was this kid she had some incredible scenes with, Chris Marquette who stole my heart. Since then, I've met (and interviewed) a lot of the cast of that show and I still hope one day to interview Mary. Time After Time will always be in my personal Top Five. And I'll follow this family anywhere.

It's too bad that in today's movies producers have no interest in casting lead actresses who aren't archetypical "lookers". I thought with actresses like Sigourney Weaver, Sally Field, Kathleen Turner, Mary Steenburgen, and Holly Hunter we'd see more spirited actresses who led movies with their performances and not with their bodies (although Kathleen did both rather well back then). Instead, it seems that after the critical/financial success of Julia Roberts, Sharon Stone, and Meg Ryan in the late 80s/early 90s female actresses had to be objectively attractive first, emotionally endearing second, and marginally convincing acting-wise third. Many trends occurred at this time too with the rise of the supermodel becoming an icon not just for her looks but also for being portrayed as business-savvy and Diva-esque. This trend found its way into the Hollywood system where leading actresses were once again propped up as glam model figures who sold magazines as well as starred opposite Bruce Willis or George Clooney.

Naughty-God I agree good post. One only has to look at say the Brits who cast for the most part real-looking people. Recently saw Dame Judi Dench in PHILOMENA and how many Hollywood actresses of any age would allow the severe close-ups her character gets, showing every age line and wrinkle. Don't get me wrong there's nothing wrong with a pretty face and body but I think Hollywood underestimates the audience out there who can appreciate the other qualities. There are too few exceptions say like Robert Redford in his latest movie.

I absolutely concur, N-G.

So pretty.

I love me some Mary Steenburgen, and I loved this movie when it came out when I was a teenager.

But she wasn't "so pretty" in this movie. She was barely cute. Most of the movie it looked like she was half-asleep. Clearly, Hollywood execs disagreed with me at the time.

Now, as the years went on, she has only gotten prettier and prettier. She is some time-defying beauty. Does she own stock in Oil of Olay? Did she nick the Time Travel Machine from this movie, which actually worked? The world needs to know.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

Always had a crush on Mary... she resembles Kate Bush a bit and I love how soft-spoken she usually is. Very proper actress.

She's too pretty in Romantic Comedy (1983), which I have just watched again last night.

She's delightful in this.
