'Better than Ever'

One of the great musical sequences in motion picture history was Candice Bergen's musical seduction of Reynolds with this song. What surprised me though was at the end of the film , you hear the song sung over the closing credits by Stephanie Mills and you realize what a great song it really is.

It really proves what a difference a good singer can make. The song sounded pretty lousy until the end credits because of Candice Bergen's, uh, limited range, and the lyrics seemed pretty awkward coming from her. But Stephanie Mills made it better than ever!

Just so you know, someone has just posted Stephanie Mills' version on YouTube.

I love this quirky movie and all the people and performances attached to it. I laughed my head off in the theater in '79 when Candice Bergen sang "Better Than Ever". I think it was that moment when I said to myself, "I'll watch anything with that brilliant, beautiful woman in it."

Stephanie Mills' version is brilliant. I consider it very underrated. Thankfully, it is included on the Stephanie Mills' Gold 2-CD compilation and also on a few other Mills' compilations.

It's a terrific song and an effective moment in the film with a wonderful performance by Bergen.
