Bluray

I know many fans are eagerly awaiting the release of the director's edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture on bluray. Personally, I would love to see a triple version package of the film.... The original theatrical version (1979), the tv version (1983), and the director's edition (2001). Anybody else have any thoughts on this?

Ideally I'd settle for just the TV version. I wasn't a fan of the continuity altering sound effect changes and the TV version was the one I grew up with. I'd hope if they do something it would include the DC and the long version.

I don't really understand the argument against bringing the DC to bluray. The effects changes were limited and even upconverted from SD couldn't look that drastically different from 1979 practical special effects side by side.

The director's cut sure was interesting, with the better pacing, and the elimination of some stupid sound effects (INTRUDER ALERT! INTRUDERS ALERT! Might as well have a computer shouting WORKING!! lol).

But if it is released on Bluray, I guarantee the additional CGI scenes will stick out like a sore thumb.

Remember Star Wars? The Special Editions? Terrible. The human eye can tell something is wrong.

I'm just on my way up to Clavius.

I disagree. Only the militant Lucas bashers complain about the CGI used for the Special Edition, and kept their whining going as the PT kept using it. I knew people who were novice Star Wars fans who couldn't tell the difference between what was old and what was new.

Also, this topic was already covered here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079945/board/thread/258251132

Yes dpcole7 l thought/hoped the '83 tv version would be the blu ray version but stupidly it wasn't.And to give us a director's cut on dvd and theatrical on blu ray is reverse logic at its highest.?

reply

Bluray and HD home video platforms didn't exist when the Director's Cut of TMP was first released on DVD. The new special effects for TMP DC were only done in SD and Paramount doesn't want to spend the money to redo them into HD and that's why the Bluray of TMP is only the Theatrical Cut.

All of the scenes that were cut from the '83 TV version are available to view on the bonus disc of the Director's Cut DVD. If Paramount sells enough Blurays of the Director's Cut of The Wrath of Khan then they may spend the money to remaster and release TMP DC on Bluray too.

Is there not a HD fan edit of the Director's Cut cobbled together from the theatrical blu ray and DC DVD (kind of like the Despecialized Star Wars versions, but in reverse)? I would have thought someone would have done such a thing by now, but there doesn't seem to be, surprisingly (there are some other fan edits of TMP, but not in the way I mean).

I bet it wouldn't take that much work to create something like that - depending on how crazy you want to go with editing in the various scenes.

I'm not asking for links to downloads or anything, but I'd love to know if something like what I'm talking about does exist and I've just missed it.

Same here.

I recall scenes in the 83 version that had some cool and extended scenes. The 2001 edition is okay but they changed too many sound effects (the new red alert klaxon is as wimpy as anything could possibly get)

They could release the DC on blu ray without the enhanced SFX..

The 1983 TV Version everyone is referring to is actually a slightly shorter version of the "Special Longer Version" that Paramount produced in 1980? I still have the Paramount Beta cassette as well as a tape the televised version which actually aired in late 1982 as it has several TV spots for Airplane II - The Sequel which was released in Dec of 1982. (I think it aired on a Thanksgiving Weekend or a week or so before as one of the spots for Airplane II said that it started the following Friday) BTW not all the scenes in the TV version made it into the 1980 Extended version cut so it is more complete than the TV edit.
