Director's Edition hits Paramount+ April 5

Official trailer coming soon.

Now then, the big news that’s breaking today—though it’s not yet official—is that the long awaited Star Trek: The Motion Picture – Director’s Edition is not only finished, but it’s going to make its exclusive streaming debut on Paramount+ on 4/5 in 4K with Dolby Atmos audio! And the trailer—which I’ve had the good fortune to see early—is set to drop any time now. The moment it does, obviously, you can consider the release official. Now then, there’s no word yet as to when a physical 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release of the film will happen, but we know that it will be exclusive to Paramount+ for a specific window of time.

Is it going to suck any less than the original cut? It was the worst right alongside V.

reply

Fake Star Trek fan! Right up there with Wrath of Khan.

Official trailer, not UHD! https://youtu.be/zrXvBaFFu80

is UHD for me.

looked great in 4K. except for the replaced CGI effects. I get it, but kinda wished they'd have just cleaned up the original effects.

I wonder how much longer, and slower will it be? usually directors cuts add in crap that was cut that slowed everything down.

someone did a comparo

The weirdest thing watching that is the decision to blue tint the film. I don't think that was necessary or an improvement.

Wonder why they decided to do that.

reply

Yes! Saw that also. Really shows in the comparison. It's that teal and orange movie look that is so abused now days. Could not leave the movie as it was, had to recolor for modern audience

reply

They added 1440p & 2160p later. Much better.

"but kinda wished they'd have just cleaned up the original effects"

The director's cut (2001) has new CG effects in SD, so it can't be scaled up.

The film is available now on the Paramount+ streaming service in the USA.
You can't open this page outside the US: http://paramountplus.qflm.net/kj0rkx

Why is it being called the Director’s Edition given that Robert Wise has long since passed?

reply

It's the cut of the film he worked on for the DVD release many years ago but they didn't use for the Blu Ray or something like that.

For all you fans who don't have a 80" 4K TV and earth-moving sound.
