i would love all of patricks movies on dvd. any news on the release?

probably a little after never, people tried to lobby the studio to release it on VHS for a decade but they never gave in.

No release date...humm. I liked that movie too. Just about all the movie stars from the late 1970's are in the film. Too bad.

I mean, never say never, but the movie didn't even have the benefit of being released on vhs for home viewing, and wasn't a huge staple of early 1980s cable or pay movie channels (unlike, say, Jekyll and Hyde Together Again, or Student Bodies; both of which were deemed unlikely to ever be released on dvd but eventually were), and wasn't a huge earner when it was briefly released into theaters.

I did send a note to Nick Feldman at Twilight Time Studios, who do blu-ray releases of Sony/Columbia movies that the main studio doesn't deem worthy of a widespread release. The major studios at times will farm out lesser titles to places like Twilight Time, Criterion and Shout/Scream Factory for blu-ray releases. Nick stated he definitely will look into this, as well as a blu-ray release for "Thank God Its Friday". Will keep this board posted.

I'm sure the music rights will keep this from ever being released to home video. It would be prohibitively expensive I'm sure.

They said that about the TV show "Freaks and Geeks". Shout! Factory got the rights to all the soundtrack music and bumped up the price of a full set a bit.

Need to start campaigning Shout! for this. Or hope that one of these studios with the "made to order" DVDs (like Warner Archives) own the rights to this and they get enough letters.

I never thought we'd see the release of Americathon but it happened a few months ago.

Last night, I was lying back looking at the stars and I thought...where the *beep* is my ceiling???

Yeah, I never thought Warners would be able to release the likes of Urgh! A Music War etc. due to the music license stuff but they did. I'd imagine Sony could get this done through their Columbia Classics DVD made on demand service (i.e. their version of Warner Archive), maybe their DVD-R services somehow get around the music license thing and therefore, make releasing movies like these this way easier to a degree? Just a thought. :)

Although late in responding, here's a little FYI:

-Freaks and Geeks' situation is different from that of Skatetown, U.S.A. for it not to be on DVD (it's an old barely remembered movie from 1979); Freaks & Geeks is a recent popular show with a cult following that would/will translate into brisk DVD sales of the complete box set (it also helps to be a short-lived show) and the songs were recent.

-Skatetown, U.S.A.; As I said, it's an old barely remembered movie from 1979 that was made to cash in on a fad, was critically lambasted, and was a box-office failure. What makes you think that any executive at Sony Pictures would be wiling to risk their job trying to get this put onto DVD (let alone Blu-Ray)? A new print has to be made (the film most likely has to be restored), and all of the rights for the music have to be squared away-all for a film that will most likely have a crappy ROI (return on investment) and not sell except to maybe twenty people in the USA.

No sensible executive at Sony Pictures is going to waste money doing that for you or the fans of this flick (and I don't think that anybody at Twilight Time or Shout!Factory would do so either.) Sometimes, a release of something like this (considered a 'trash classic' by some and a complete turkey by others) isn't in the cards.
