So three horny inmates rape a vulnerable inmate...

...and he commits suicide while the guards did nothing to prevent it, even dismissed his pleas for help. And for some strange reason that baffles me to this day, those same three rapist inmates stand in solidarity with the rest of their lot in the canteen in defiance of the guards because he died?

Why is this? Does this simply boil down to an "us vs them" mentality, regardless of how the tragedy came to be? To be honest, I don't know why it wasn't the three rapists who were dragged, bloody, to the solitary confinement cells!

reply

Us vs Them. You nailed it.
Why would Carlin and co know he was raped and that's why he killed himself? He didn't tell anyone.

The injustice just boils my blood. Even little things like the black kid telling the counselor woman that his wife had died, and she thought he meant a pet by the kid's nickname for his wife, and then he ends up dying after being transferred to prison. And any attempt by the inmates to assert their humanity, like Archer with the prison officer away from the chapel, and they get ground down.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Tories (who were in power by then) commissioned this awful movie.

No. The movie was made before the Tories got in power. It was a remake of the banned BBC play. You can watch the original 1977 version on YouTube. It was remade because director Alan Clarke felt it was a powerful story and worth doing.

reply

Thanks for the clarification. And it seems it was remade twice: the version I saw has three inmates, handcuffed, arriving at the detention centre in a van, but I know the other version started with a van chasing what appeared to be an escaped inmate.

reply

That's the original TV version that starts with a van chasing the escaped inmate. There is a Canadian version of it called Dog Pound or something that was made in 2009 or 2010.

Theres an American movie apparently along much the same lines with Shaun Penn . bad boys or something ...
just writing this now as a note to remind me to find it

reply

Yes, I wondered that about the three rapists supposedly showing solidarity, despite the fact that them raping him most likely sent him over the edge.

reply

They were hardly going to own up.
