Archer eating a sausage..

What was the relevance when Carlin says 'Vegetarians? i *beep* em!', then he orders Archer to eat that sausage? i thought him and Archer were on friendly terms and you had the impression they respected each other? Cheers.

I thought Archer was just pretending to be veggie to piss the guards off and make their life more difficult by running around getting him plastic shoes and veggie meals. I thought Carlin gave him the sausage because he knew what Archer was doing, so was doing him a favour by letting him eat some meat.

I hope that's the part you were on about anyway! Ignore me if not!

Archer says he is a vegetarian for the same reason he refuses to wear leather and claims to be an atheist/ muslim- to cause trouble for the screws.... He knows they must cater for him..

Carlin and Archer become friends after Archer tells Carlin how much he likes to cause trouble in the scene in the boot room... Carlin being his friend does him a favour by giving him meat when no one is looking.

Does Carlin force Archer to eat that sausage against his will (to assert his dominance) or is Archer only a vegetarian to give the staff more of a headache and he doesn't really have any moral objections to eating meat and Carlin is giving him a treat? Are Carlin and Archer really mates or are they fairly indifferent to each other (they just get on and that's about it)?

reply

its previous that carlin was just doing him a favour and sneaking him a sausage whilst the guards wernt looking

reply

I thought it was obvious that Carlin was simply doing Archer a favour to keep his energy levels up as he only gets to eat vegetables each day. If you remember, fish wasn't on the menu that often so all he got in place of that was double helpings of potatos.

No, no, NO. Come on, jesus, watch the movie. Archer says "are you serious?" or something, with his mouth practically hanging open in anticipation.

Archer is pretending to be a vegetarian to annoy the screws. Carlin gives him a sausage because he appreciates his motives.

Makes him eat a sausage against his will... Jesus, sometimes I wonder if humanity is totally doomed. I mean come ON.

Right on! I barely understand a lot of the things they say with they're cockney accents and I still understood that.

That's my corn out there! You guys are guests in my corn!

Archer was only pretending to be a veggie so they would have to give him a special meal. He is playing the system - the same reason why he doesn't wear boots (being anti-leather). He claims to be an atheist to avoid going to church service - avoiding doing what the other inmates do and causing the prison to have to detail an officer to be with him. These little digs at the system are the small victories that allow Archer to feel that the system hasn't crushed his individual spirit. Carlin realizes that Archer is playing the system - he offers him the sausage because he knows that he wants it. A kindred spirit who refuses to be just a number.

he didnt order him to eat it- he gave it to him - because he wanted it. he wasnt a vegetarian mate- he just wanted to make the screws life's as difficult as possible- so he learnt the rule book inside out and utilised it to wind the screws up.

yes they were friends and respected each other.

archer was not a veggie, this was relayed throughout the film.

why am i replying to an 8 year old thread- odd.

in that scene it looked like all he was given was salad leaves, perhaps as some kind of punishment
it's also obvious he wasnt a vegetarian, to be given food by another inmate(especially the alpha male) is a privilege, he was shocked to be offered it from Carlin

Interesting. It didn't occur to me. I thought Archer was a serious vegetarian, given that he was quite intellectual and well read. But it makes a lot of sense, that his vegetarian thing was just an act.
