Carlin would of KICKED THE CRAP out of Mr Sands

You could tell when Sands was slapping Carlin in the face that Carlin was gagging to knock him out with a bag of pool balls!

For every action....there is a definate and distinct reaction.

reply

Carlin would've smashed the bastard. He didn't because he couldn't fight the whole lot of them-he'd tried that before.

Not much even a top fighter would have been able to do against a hundred kids going nuts.A lot of former soldiers end up working in places like prisons and borstals,id say yes he is a bully, but he may also be a real hard nut

reply

I knew some people that worked in a similar place, all of them have anger issuses.
But the end scene....

SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

.... shows that when outnumbered they are pussies. The next scene when the key players are being dragged into the cells semi unconcious. I always knew that after the cavalry arrived to clean up the riot, the screws would hold each one of them down and give them what for.
You can learn a lot about people from watching this film.

I'd say Sands would win.
When I was Carlins age, my step dad was a real cnut to me, and I retaliated and got a mans beating in return.
A few years later when I was 18, it kicked off again and I felt I would have battered him, however, family pulled us apart and on paper, it was a draw.
When I hit 19 and really beefed up and doing the rounds with the lads at night, my step dad couldn't have been nicer as he KNEW I'd knock the living snot out of him if it came to it.
Comparing this is like comparing the original question, the lads at 15 MIGHT have been a bit tasty and fancied their chances, but they were still youths against grown hard men.
Fast Forward a few years, they'd have battered the guards..........which is why the guards were so sadistic knowing they only had a 18 month window to be as nasty and ruthless as possible

reply

Althought Carlin might seem hard, notice that every time he beats someone up, he takes them by surprise and uses some kind of instrument (pool balls in sock, iron bar, smashing Bank's face onto the sink).

I don't think it we'd know exactly who would win, but I'd go for Sands.

reply

thats how you get someone, no point gettin yourself slapped back

reply

Exactly, you get tooled up and do 'em!

reply

That true however I reckon Carlin would have beaten Sands in a fight on the streets (he'd be older than 15) as Borstal went on much later till 22 (I think)
I reckon Carlins about 18-19, and Winstone himself was 22 when he made the film.

reply

Borstal age went up to 21. Carlin was probably meant to be 17 or 18.

Theres very little to suggest that Sands wasn't mainly mouth and alot of front. He shouted alot and barked orders to try and show that he was in charge. He also had a team of screws nearby to back him up. Given that he was in charge of mainly boys who weren't fully developed strength wise, there was not the risk there is in a real prison.

I believe Carlin had every chance in a one-on-one brawl. Okay he wasn't a UFC heavyweight, but he was a fairly big guy and proved that he could take people down. Mr Sand's struck me as the kind of man who would only 'fight' when his opponent was at a disadvantage.

reply

My money's on Carlin.

I've been chasing grace/ But grace ain't easy to find

reply

Its a queation of youth vs experience. Carlin was very physically fit and a good fighter as we saw when he took Banks out. He's also not afraid to use weapons. Carlin's style is to get in, do as much damage as possible in a short amount of time and then dissapear. Sands is older, maybe not as fit as Carlin, but I'd be willing to bet he knows a few tricks and would give Carlin a run for his money.

In a stand up scrap with no weapons, I think Carlin's ferocity would win but Sands would do some damage.

However, if it were Carlin vs Taylor (the screw that grabbed Carlin's balls at the film's start)? Taylor would beat seven shades of *beep* out of Carlin. Younger and more vicious than Sands, Taylor was *beep* intimidating when I first saw Scum.
