This movie was panned when it came out......I thought it was funny

Richard Benjamin was funny as hell in this......this movie is a very funny comedy.

Hard to believe it was panned and blasted by every notable critic in the US.

I first saw this at the theater when I was 12 years old and I just about peed my pants...I'm 41 now, and I still just about pee my pants every time I see this movie!

It's one of my favorite all-time movies. No matter how bad or sad a mood I'm in, if I see this movie, all's well again.

El Paso, Texas...ever heard of it?

I love the movie too. It ranks as one of my all time favorites. Cloris Leachman running about in those 3-inch heels cracks me up, as do Georgie's nasal whining and the laughing gas scene.

Truly a fun, sweet and nostalgic movie.

Dammit Carol Sue, where is the vodka?!

reply

For me it holds nostalgic value only, with only a few scenes still genuinely funny to me in my more jaded years. Richard Benjamin was very good as the frenzied creep of a lawyer, but there were way too many gags that were just lame, too reliant on the goofy faces of the name-brand stars rather than setup and timing. The film also suffers from trying to be simultaneously cruel (fat people, Dummitz) and having a heart, i.e. Tony Randall's family and the teen-girl-heartthrobs Dirk Benedict and Willie Aames. That didn't work for me either. The movie needed a bit crueler edge to really make it. More Richard Benjamin, less Tony Randall and the hip kids in the van. The house staff (James Coco, Cleavon Little,...) also weren't very funny in my opinion. Basically, it felt like the producers thought they could mash together a heap of second-tier stars and have everything work, without investing time into a sharper script.

*beep* the critics-this movie is funny.

Americans have become spoiled and jaded. They've lost their hearts and buried their heads. They hate each other and are close minded. Most of them don't have the attention span to sit through a movie without sex and violence.

Sad but true, and I'm overjoyed to not be among the above majority. Oh, and my kids love SH too.

Well arthurab, you have shown the world that you are a true bigot.
I only saw this movie in the past 12 years so there is no sentimental value. I didn't see it originally but my wife loved it and showed it to me. I really like this movie and I'm an American!

reply

You liked the movie too...good!!

As far as what you think about me, enjoy being an American and think whatever you want.

reply

It's not about being an American and I would have never brought it up if not for our post. I just enjoy life (the good parts anyway loL). It shouldn't be about where we live or what race or religion we are. Good comedy can and should be appreciated by all. And good comedy can be panned by critics (who themselves would never have the talent to make their own film! No matter what race, place they were born etc.....)

Agree with you completely, hyperjet.
