A Big 'Thank-You' To One Of Our Regular Posters

elmadman_99, I am talking about YOU!! He helped me by providing suggestions for my new story, which I have decided to call The Diversion. Thank you my friend.

Now, to keep on-topic, and the nice moderator people happy, who here has noticed goofs in the book? Other than the ones that we've talked about, I mean.

What were they?

can you answer this for me? Read this is in the book: This is an older post from a few weeks ago:

"I mean she picked up the phone in her house, and heard a conversation between 2 ladies in other houses! Unless that part's poorly written by King. I think he wrote about that 2 times in the book."

Not a goof.

It was an ancient telephone system called a 'party line'. They are obsolete now, but some areas had them until the 1970's or later. Basically, it was a 'take your turn' type of arrangement where the same line was shared by numerous people. This was what the book was referring to when Mabel Werts was listening in, as party lines enabled you to do that.

You could hang up, but the line itself remained open.

Hope this helps.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the above. Your kind words are much appreciated. I'm pleased that some of the commentary that I provided was at least helpful.

Keep up the writing regardless of what anyone says. If it allows you to express yourself, and experience freedom then that's a good payoff. If you can keep people entertained and maybe make a few bucks into the bargain then all the better.

Long may you run, and may your fountain pen and word-processor never run out of good words.

And now to get back 'on topic' with 'goofs' in the novel.

I know that this particular point has been covered before, but I want to set the ball rolling on the 'goofs' thread and see where it takes us.

When Ben and Mark find Susan's car (after she is reported missing) the text reads:

'Ben began to walk toward the car and his foot kicked something. He looked down and saw a .38 revolver lying in the dust. He picked it up and turned it over in his hands. It looked very much like a police issue revolver.

‘Whose gun?’ Mark asked, walking toward him. He had Susan’s keys in his hand.

‘I don’t know.’ He checked the safety to be sure it was on, and then put the gun in his pocket.'

Anyone who knows firearms will see a goof here. I am no specialist but I know that posters such as Gary and 'Jefbecco-1' if he is around will know for sure.

Enquiring minds want to know so let's start the ball rolling...

Cheers for now.

Now, can anyone answer the esteemed Mr E's question? Jangoq, you impress me as someone who knows guns reasonably well; why don't you take a shot (pun intended) at it? What is the goof in the passage quoted from the book? Thrill me with your acumen.

I usually get exhausted reading his posts, but for you I'll do it.

I've never really handled a .38 much before but I don't think they come with safeties.

Very good! There is a slight caveat, however. Not just 38's as Ben handled, but revolvers of all makes typically don't have manual safeties that you can flick on or off.

I asked you to thrill me with your acumen and you did so.

I knew you'd like that.

Half way through the novel there is a discussion between Ben, Susan, and Dr. Cody about exhuming the body of Danny Glick.

This point has been covered on a different thread, and I know because I had to do a little online research to find out where the 'goof' was in the writing.

Ok, there is definitely a goof in the text below, let's see who can spot what it is.

The book reads:

‘You’ll do it?’ Susan said, frankly amazed.

‘What can it hurt? If he’s dead, he’s dead. If he’s not, then I’ll have something to stand the AMA convention on its ear next time. I’m going to tell the county M.E. that I want to look for signs of infectious encephalitis. It’s the only sane explanation I can think of.’

‘Could that actually be it?’ she asked hopefully.

‘Damned unlikely.’

‘What’s the earliest you could do it?’ Ben asked.

‘Tomorrow, tops. If I have to hassle around, Tuesday or Wednesday.’

‘What should he look like?’ Ben asked. ‘I mean . . .’

‘Yes, I know what you mean. The Glicks wouldn’t have the boy embalmed, would they?’

‘No.’

‘It’s been a week?’

‘Yes.’

‘When the coffin is opened, there’s apt to be a rush of gas and a rather offensive smell. The body may be bloated. The hair will have grown down over his collar – it continues to grow for an amazing period of time – and the fingernails will also be quite long. The eyes will almost certainly have fallen in.’

Susan was trying to maintain an expression of scientific impartiality and not succeeding very well. Ben was glad he hadn’t eaten lunch.

‘The corpse will not have begun radical mortification,’ Cody went on in his best recitation voice, ‘but enough moisture may be present to encourage growth on the exposed cheeks and hands, possibly a mossy substance called—’ He broke off. ‘I’m sorry. I’m grossing you out.’

‘Some things may be worse than decay,’ Ben remarked, keeping his voice carefully neutral.

I have spotted it, but I'll give someone else a chance to answer.

No takers? It's been three years and I have yet to be so thrilled.

reply

Hair and nails don't grow after death. The skin shrinks a little which makes them look a bit longer, but they don't really grow. Dr. Cody would know this.

You have thrilled me with your acumen.
