Castle Architecture

I remember seeing this film when I was a kid ( about 15 years ago ), and the thing that struck me then the most, more than the story or whatever, is the castle itself...it's so incredibly huge, so beautiful...does anyone have any info on the castle itself? Has anyone been so impressed with it as me?

Being from Europe, I think I can understand Miyazakis take on the story and atmosphere better than most non-Europeans. San Marino doesn't quite resemble the landscape shown (see: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bild:San_marino_panorama_1.jpg and http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bild:San_marino_panorama_2.jpg ), but it is an autonomous republic like the one used in the movie. But the country used in COC would be more to the north, located somewhere on the southern side of the Alps.

Anyways, I think Miyazaki - being a fan of Europe, see Laputa, Porco Rosso, Howl - took his dearest memories and fantasies about the romantical aspects of Europe and made Cagliostro out of it. You can see places similar to it all over Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia and Italy. Also being a micronation makes it likeable, as you think of Liechtenstein, Andorra, or San Marino.

I also saw a (badly cut) version as a kid, and I also was fascinated by the castle and its surrounding. Too bad the Europe portrayed in this movie ist sort of gone. I wish Europe was to be split up into hundreds of small countries again.

Well, I guess Ghibli(or someone who had an interview with them) said it's Mont Saint Michel, not San Leo.

This one sort of looks like CoC :)

I also like the old-school background art of this animation, both detailed & beautiful.
Impressive they made it to this quality with the short of money and time(plus the lack of big fancy CG tech).

I liked the castle .Very Alpine and fairy-tale type. With a touch of menace.
