Beautiful title song, but it doesn't really reflect the character.

I think "The Rose" is one of the most beautiful, heart-rending songs ever, but listening to the lyrics just now, it doesn't really sound like it's talking about the main character. If anything, The Rose lived and loved too much and too hard... But what a tearjerker. I wonder if the song had been written (and produced) in 1979, rather than 1975, if it would have been nominated for Best Song?

I see it Mr H, as a song about a gentle and genuine kind of love that seemed to have alluded Rose. She didn't really allow herself to bloom to the fullest potential. Rose had reached the top and then still couldn't find the true meaning of love and what it represents. The booze, drugs, wild parties and men were what she indulged in, being the self-destructive creature she was. The song was like her own epitaph, that she only knew what love really was, after she died. Well anyway, that's my 2 cent take on it and yes beautiful song. Had it had been written solely for the film, then I think it would have had a great chance of being nominated.

I can totally see what you're saying, Rascal. I guess I was mistaking Rose's passion for the rest of it. I do think that Rose had a huge heart and a huge spirit, but for whatever reason she couldn't resist the lure of self-destruction.

I've watched a few documentaries of Janis Joplin and seen a few of her interviews, and she was just this sweet, loving, gentle, but very hurting soul.

Two brilliant performances from the late 70's and early 80's about self-destructive characters that are unforgettable, Midler in THE ROSE-79' and Lange in FRANCES-82', and while they were acknowledged with nominations, of course the awards had to go to Miss Sally Thing, and Miss Meryl Ego.
