Hey guys! In the original Rocky, Gazzo's henchmen stated that 'only retards go to the zoo' and that Rocky should take Adrian there. Rocky finds this offensive and tries to grab the henchmen (to probably knock him out) but he quickly drives away. I'm sure you all remember that scene. Anyways, in Rocky II that's exactly where Rocky takes Adrian in the beginning of the film, and proposes to her.
Always wondered about this. Knowing that society (or at least according to the henchmen from the original) that only retards go to the zoo... why would Rocky take Adrian there knowing exactly what was said in the original? Adrian even asks Rocky why are they there. Thoughts?

Maybe he thought she really was mentally handicapped. Sure, he told her she was smart and all that but did Rocco really think that?

Maybe Gazzo's bodyguard was wrong about the zoo. Or about Adrian. Or both.

Many people like the zoo.

I found the character of Adrian refreshing. Too many women work too hard to impress others that they are sophisticated, cultural, well traveled, etc.. The best movie example of this I can think of was Stephanie in "Saturday Night Fever". Say what you want about Adrian, but she was the real deal.

By the middle of "Rocky 2" anything said by Gazzo's men in the first movie was in Rocky's rear view mirror. Rocky also was the real deal. I don't think he cared much what other people thought or said.

Because he had a bad "eye" and then he went to the zoo to see a "tiger". That's how he got "The eye of the tiger".

If you actually paid attention to the dialogue you'd know that Rocky likes the zoo, it's a special place to him. And he particularly seems to like tigers, as evidenced by the cheesy jacket he just had to have. In hindsight (though I doubt they had the scene in mind when filming the first movie) that might be one of the reasons why Rocky got so mad at Gazzo's driver, because he was taking it as a poke at himself as well as Adrian.

Adrian: What are we doing here at the zoo?

Rocky: Well, you know, I kinda like the zoo a lot. It's a special place, especially when it snows, it smells clean and everything.

"Dan Marino should die of gonorrhea and rot in hell. Would you like a cookie son?"
