Eye cut scene

Anyone else notice they cut out the eyelid cut scene in this one in the beginning when they were replaying the end of one?

reply

Yeah, probably because it looked so fake.

No kidding. I only watched it for the first time at the weekend, and genuinely wondered why the guy needed to squirt paint on Rocky's face. For some reason I thought it was to give him colour, like some weird boxing makeup thing they do for the cameras. It was only afterwards I realised he was supposed to be cutting his eyelid.

and in Rocky 3 the sound effect of them both falling down in the final round is different, it's funny how little things we can pick up on

when I first seen that scene cut out it was on tv so assumed years ago it was cut out on censors! used to have rocky 2 on VHS off tv for years!! wasn't till DVD I realised it really was cut out

Good catches

I always wondered if Stallone was forced to get the eye cutting scene out during the recap to avoid an R rating. I know it's in the first one which was PG. But maybe the MPAA was a little stricter three years later. And of course PG-13 didn't exist yet. Or it could come down to Stallone thinking that it looked pretty fake. Who knows.

Not to mention it would have been right in the beginning of the movie, this time. Much more impactful in the first few seconds than at the end. Also you don't want people getting grossed out and walking out as the movie started, expecting it to be a gore-flick.

Also Stallone I'm sure figured most viewers were already familiar with the first film and there wasn't a need to show that part again.

reply

Maybe Stallone thought it was too graphic.
