Blu-ray review for 'Paul McCartney and Wings: Rockshow'

"Rockshow" has previously been available on home video — most notably, a Betamax version was issued in 1981 — but thanks to the current high definition age, the concert has never looked or (especially) sounded better.

It’s not perfect and we suspect fans would’ve loved to have seen some present-day participation from McCartney or any of the other surviving band members, but it’s a rocking presentation of a wonderful show.

Rockshow is an excellent concert film and it's amazing that it's only getting a proper video release now. Even the Betamix version wasn't the full concert. The bonus feature which is mainly footage from the time is interesting. But I agree that it would've been nice to at least have present day McCartney at least briefly reflecting back on that particular tour.

Another interesting thing is how there are only five Beatles songs in the set list. By no means am I suggesting that Wings were better than the Beatles but most of their songs from this period were good enough to still put together one hell of a concert. If you see McCartney today he does include some Wings and solo numbers but the setlist is pretty Beatles heavy.

Agree that the lone special feature is good. I especially liked the fan comments at the end and footage of the band goofing around backstage. I still wish there had been some retrospective stuff.

The Wings material is certainly good enough to stand on its own, but the inclusion of the Beatles stuff is more symbolic than anything. McCartney and the band finally felt established enough to sprinkle in some Beatles material into the tour.

Thanks for the insightful comment.
