The accepted Holy Trinity of comedy is
Bruce
Pryor
Carlin
Anyone who would fail to include Bill Hicks in their offered stand-up 'Holy Trinity' is either unfamiliar with the man's comedic genius...or possesses a faulty/underdeveloped sense of humor. And that's pretty much a fact.

There can be only three:
1. The Greatest - Jerry Seinfeld
2. The Great - George Carlin
3. The One and Only - Eddie Murphy
Bill Hicks
Richard Pryor
Chris Rock
no other comedians have ever pushed the envolope as much as these three and for that reason they are the greatest stand ups the world has ever seen (so far)
jerry seinfeld? JERRY SEINFELD? JERRY FUC|<ING SEINFELD????
i think that says it all :)
Chris Rock? You have got to be kidding me. He's a weak attempt at immitating Eddie Murphy immitating Pryor.

dude if you think eddie murphy is funnier than chris rock then you really need your head examined! have you even watched delirious/raw? bring the pain and bigger and blacker blows murphy totally out of the water. chris is edgier and pushes the boundaries far more than eddie ever did or could!
come on, i mean seriously, do you really think the ice cream routine is thaat funny? give me the oj simpson stuff, tossed salad routine or the *beep* vs black people story any day of the week!
LOL, Jerry Seinfeld. Holy hell, is he for real?
"Say, why do they call it brunch? Is it breakfeast? Is it lunch? And if there's a brunch, how come there's no lupper? Or linner?"
Somebody shoot me.
I haven't read the other posts. Just the first one. Those three are my favorite too. And I've seen anything and everything stand-up. My other two on the list to round out a top 5 would be Eddie Murphy and Steven Wright. Most likely a generic top 5 that most people would pick are the original 3 plus Dangerfield and Carlin rather than Murphy and Wright. Rodney I love, Carlin is very good, but more of the type I agree with and clap than die laughing listening to.

They're the funniest stand ups I've seen (although it's on DVD where I've seen them, more's the pity). The order depends on which one I've seen most recently. Pryor is most regularly at the top though.
Eddie Murphy is good, but hasn't got heart. Pryor said he felt that Eddie was a bit too nasty.... although I can't remember exactly what word he used to describe him. (That was the general idea though.)
"I know it and you know it. Yellow Dog doesn't even know what town he's in."
