Worst Paul Newman Movie Ever

I saw this film when it was released in 1979 and thought it was one of the most depressing movies of all time. It seemed to have no point and I thought it was never going to end. I thought I was going to lose my mind watching it. I do not understand why Paul Newman agreed to appear in such tripe.

It certainly didn't do him any favours, nor any of the cast. I've only seen part of it but it looks terrible. Does anything happen in it all?

Correction: It is the Worst Movie Ever!!!!!!!!

70's cinema, the lunatics had taken over the asylum. For every Godfather there was 10, even 20 films like this. Self-indulgant rubbish.

reply

Really? For every great 80s or 90s or 00s film you can name I can name two great 70s films. Yes there were some howlers and Altman had a number, but the 70s were the greatest movie decade in my opinion and I promise not to call Star Wars a great film.

reply

Cause he is a serious actor darling and probably wanted to make a movie that had a message.

reply

Yes. I thought Newman and Altman...how can I go wrong? I can.

reply

IMO this is still the worst major motion picture (meaning with named actors and a top director) I have ever seen. I can remember seeing this in a full theater on the opening Saturday matinee and by the time it was over the theater was half full.

reply

I had the same experience. Theater was emptied out because of theater-goers who left before the end. I made it through. The worst major motion picture ever made. Agreed!

Altman was a master, but even a master makes duds sometimes. I was living in Montreal when this one "premiered" at a small art house. I remember the silence in the audience as the awful story unfolded. Some people who had worked on the film wore Quintet T-shirts; they looked uneasy to be there.

One thing they got right: the cold of a Montreal winter. It can go to -40 degrees--although that is rare. The actors really earned their pay on this one.

reply

The whole movie looks like it was filmed through a greasy camera lens.
