Long hair?

One line that always slightly amused me is when they're in the courtroom being chastised by the judge, he criticizes them for having "long hair." Long hair? Their hair wasn't really that long, as both the Mods and Rockers seemed to have relatively short haircuts. Nothing like the much longer hair styles sported by the hippies a few years later.

Nowadays, men might wear their hair long or short, and nobody seems to care all that much. But it seemed like a HUGE deal back in the 1960s and early 70s, as I recall.

Does anyone else think that Jimmy's hair was "long"?

Not long by 2012 standards. But occasionally in other dramas from the 50s and early 60s, the era of short hair, I have heard guys being called "long-haired" even if their hair was only slightly longer, or thicker, than the then norm.

Not sure about English schools but in the US at the time many schools had rules that if your hair touched your ears or collar it was too long.

Look at the "Beatles '65" album cover, they were called mop tops and thought to have extremely long hair.

As to your question, it was long for the time.
