Mods and Rockers not wearing crash helmets?

Keeping in mind that the wearing of crash helmets was not compulsory in the 60's many motorcyclists and scooter riders didnt wear them until helmets became compulsory in 1973.
Obviously to make the movie look authentic the Mods and Rockers were not wearing crash helmets during fiming on public roads in 1979,so they would actually be breaking the law right??
How did the film makers get round this problem?

"It's not a contravention, we're making a film. Bugger off, copper."
The producers apply for, and usually obtain, permits, and roadways are closed.
There are notable exceptions, such as "The French Connection". Motorheads should also seek out Claude Lelouch's "Rendezvous" (ask Mr. Google, and mind the myths), from an era when motoring was still fun.

What I had in mind was boxing the compass.

I havent seen this flick in ages, did they wear any glasses/shades at all. Imagine all those bugs splatting on your face in summer.

Ah ! But you don't know what an English Summer is like !

It would be special permits and closed or private roads and they need it for authenticity reasons.
