The Ending *Spoilers*

Is this the first time this kind of 'screamer' jump scare has been used in Cinema? I haven't seen many movies from this period that use the long lingering shot of something in the distance then BOOM!, scary monster thing in frame. I do like the jump scare ending but I wasn't sure. Any one know any other films from this time with a screamer?

I don't know of any films that used that type of ending besides this one but I really wish they went with the original ending. Instead of the big monster head popping up they had the camera pan over to the trees with the heavy breathing sound in the background. Katahdin lives!

I've heard it's on this desperately sought after R-rated version. Unfortunately, I can't get any version here in the UK to my knowledge but hey ho, thank goodness for Youtube!
Thanks for the feed back :)

I've done some searching for that version of the movie but didn't find anything...there's a German DVD that says uncut on the box but I don't know if it's legit...also some people say that the Sweden version is longer. I hope a Blu-Ray is released with these uncut scenes but since Frankenheimer passed away it's unlikely.

I'd like to see the extended sleeping bag sequence that I hear about from time to time, Katahdin smacks the kid around a little before swatting him to his death.

I've heard in Canada they show the extended cut but unfortunately as you say, I doubt we'll have a re-release unless Paramount feel generous.

The sleeping bag scene for me goes down as one of the best ridiculous death scenes. I never knew it was extended!

It's not a bad film when you strip through the schlock, its heart is set in the right place and I wish they'd release it here properly in the UK.

I have the DVD and it says 18A for Canada but there's no differences from what I can tell.

I actually like the way the sleeping bag sequence started but once the kid went flying through the air it got unintentionally hilarious. Just the thought of being woke up in the middle of the night by a giant mutant bear is scary as hell but with the way the kid died it ended up being humorous overall.

It's definitely an ok movie if you can get past the occasionally cheesy SFX (some of it looked good for the time) and some of the character's questionable actions.

I remember the sleeping bag kill being quite brutal at the start, but honestly, they should of just had a reaction shot of the kid as the claws smashed down on him, then in the next shot when they find him the sleeping bag burst with blood spilling out of it, for a more dramatic effect

The bit that still gets me is, why did they get an inner city doctor to go investigate and ecological problem? I understand the human element to it, but then it'd make more sense if he was paired up with someone or like, his wife was an ecologist and he got called along.

I get what you meen Chubbalubbadingdong. In fact, when Rob is approached by this guy to take the job, he says that he's already got 3 other people on it but that he also needs a people person. I was expecting these other three to be introduced and probably be the characters to die, but it never happened.

reply

That would of been a more plausible idea. Rob is sent for the human/medical side of the investigation. The others are a environmentalist and biologist and geologist all sent out with Rob to investigate the environmental damage and how it's effecting wild life, woodland/mountains, animals and people, then go from there.

Seriously?!
Then you haven't watched a lot of 70's horror movies have you?
It was done LOTS before this film.
Most notably in Carrie

The ending made a certain sort of sense. Katahdin was apparently a female, since it was coming back for its cubs; that means there must have been a monster male grizzly out there, for her to mate with.

Even if the bear at the end (who I think is more frightening-looking than Katahdin) wasn't her mate, it might have been a cub from another litter.
