'I'll Never Say Goodbye'

Does anyone know the circumstances of that song in the show? As in when is it in the movie? Who sings it? Etc.

Thanks!

The song is played at both the beginning and end of the film. It was sung by Melissa Manchester... and was nominated for the Oscar. (The same year Melissa Manchester's "Through the Eyes of Love" from "Ice Castles" was nomiated.) I just love this movie... as bad as it is... I adore it.

Rosemary Clooney recorded this song and I was so surprised when I heard it on a collection.

It's such a great tune!

Barbra Streisand's version is hard to top.

Rosemary was to sing the song at the wedding of one of her sons, so she began singing it at performances, so that she could eventually get through it without crying at the wedding.

I love this song and the entire soundtrack to this film. I have it on both cassette and album and still play it.

I can't believe that neither of the Melissa Manchester songs that were nominated for the Oscar that year won. The song from Norma Rae won instead. I bet nobody even remembers that one.

Say goodbye,
Why, I can barley say goodbye.
If I can hardly take my eyes from yours,
How far can I go?

Walk away,
The thought would never cross my mind.
I couldn't turn my back on this spring of hope,
Your smiling stubborn.

When I say always,
I mean forever.
I trust tomorrow as much as today.
I'm not afraid to say,
I love you.
And I promise you,
I'll never say goodbye.

How could I ever say goodbye?

Instrumentally it's all through the film
I think Maureen McGovern has the most played version of it.

Hey thbryn- you got some of it right. May I help?

Say good-bye - why I can barely good-night
If I can hardly take my eyes from yours
How far can I go?

Walk away - the thought would never cross my mind
I couldn't turn my back on spring or fall...your smile least of all...

You got the rest just fine. BTW... there is another stanza. I know the words to that one, too. 

(I don't know why but this beautiful song has been on my mind today...so I had to look the movie up, too. )

The song from Norma Rae is "It Goes Like It Goes," sung by Jennifer Warnes. It's on her greatest hits collection. And as much as I love the two Melissa Manchester songs, I still think they gave the Oscar that year to the right song.

It was a good year for Big Ballads. So late 70s!

There are several recorded versions of the theme song ("I'll Never Say Goodbye") available on iTunes, including by Rosemary Clooney, Christopher Gines, Earl Klugh, Larry Evans, Madeline Kole, and Monica Mancini. There may be others as well.

i have been sitting here wracking my brain trying to figure out what other movie or tv show i've heard this song on...and i'm totally cracking up now that i remember...

...it was the song Fran Drescher used to walk down the aisle when her character got married on the Nanny...not sure why, but that cracks me up.

Debby Boone also recorded a great cover of this song in 1979.

I just finally got the soundtrack LP transferred to CD. It only took 30 years exactly. :)

reply

I would LOVE to have this CD! Where did you find it? Where can I buy it? I especially want a copy of Melissa Manchester singing "I'll Never Say Goodbye" but I cannot find it anywhere. Suggestions would be extremely helpful!!!

reply

Melissa Manchester's version was never released on CD. It was supposed to be released on her Playlist compilation (released through Sony Legacy) but it never happened because of legal issues concerning the master. It's still held up in licensing limbo.

Judy Collins recorded a version on her Hard time for Lovers CD in 1979.
