I have the Phantasm soundtrack on vinyl! How rare is it?

I seem to be the only one to have it sealed!

Update: I SOLD it - thanks!

I ordered my copy through "Starlog", which used to offer a lot of genre soundtracks back in the Seventies. I would think that it's not all that rare but that there would be interest. While others have expressed dislike of the music, for me and many others it instantly identifies this SF/horror classic. I rate it high on the list of my soundtrack favorites.

Good luck with your sale! Maybe Chiller Channel's fairly frequent airing of the film will spark a lot of interest.

The soundtrack in it's many forms is sought after. The original vinyl is great, but obviously would have sound flaws (pops, scratches, hiss, etc). There have been three issues on CD: the original Varese Sarabande (exact copy of the vinyl; hardest to find and most expensive), SilvaScreen (includes the complete original soundtrack plus a newly-recorded suite from Phantasm 2; VERY hard to find but very worth it - this is the one I have. I got it new in the 90s for $20. It goes for much more than that now) and the website reissue with remastered sound (it's expensive but able to be found on eBay).

I think it's an amazing and innovative soundtrack. The liner notes on the SilvaScreen release go into depth about the new and unusual techniques Fred Myrow employed in making the haunting noises heard throughout.

It would be nice to have a new release of the soundtrack that includes the 12" (yellow blood-splattered vinyl) disco version of the theme and "Sitting Here At Midnight" by Bill Thornbury, as well as the suite from Phantasm 2.

RHPSvegas:
Well, you know your Phantasm vinyl better than I do, thanks for the info! If I ever stumble upon ANY of these, I will certainly snap them up! Did you check out my LP cover? You would have to search for it by name, but I have not sold it yet:

I totally want to make an offer, but def not in the financial position for the purchase. I'm sure some lucky horror fanatic will take it off your hands soon though! :)

I dig anything from the 70's....and I think it had some of the acoustic stuff Reggie Bannister did on the porch, when they played a few ditties, off character, but to show they were talented, and to win the audience over! 1979 was a great year, man!

That's a badass thing to own! As both a lover of vinyl and of Phantasm and its cheesy music, I am super jealous dude.

Well, I haven't sold it yet! Part of me wants to open it up and play it and record it to CD-R, but if I open it, it'll lose its worth as 'New/sealed'! I kinda wonder if the guitar stuff that Reggie Bannister does is also on the soundtrack? Those were some cool riffs/tunes! Make me an offer! LOL ;) (I love vinyl too!)

dude, I just noticed your post, and the idea of someone in 2010 listening to the Phantasm soundtrack on vinyl prompted me to think to myself: "This guy is a madman (in a good way)."

Then I saw that your IMDB nickname is "I, Madman," and I laughed out loud. That was awesome. Had to share. OK, we now return you to your regularly scheduled life.

You are toast, my toasty friend.

Dude, I sold that sealed Phantasm soundtrack for a decent sum...not a ton, but a decent amount....don't wanna say, but there are some real horror fans out there who will pay top dollar for decent soundtracks! Thanks for replying!

i dont understand why a true fan would sell the original vinyl?? well, the economy is bad....

reply

Well, it is a bad economy, that's for sure!
At first, I was the only one who had a copy of it (sealed) on all of Amazon. I tried to get $100 for it, but did end up lowering it a little, but did sell it eventually.
Yes, I wish I could have listened to it, but by opening the seal, I would have devalued it, even if I just played it once! Know what I'm saying? I know I'll NEVER find that LP again, it's so damn rare....

AMEN, to what the previous poster said about selling it if indeed you are a true fan of the Phantasm lore. I sell, as well as collect Rare, Outdated Movies, not VHS though, and a few I'm especially enamoured with are mine till the Lord brings me home! Some items, even in the dead economy are untouchable in my opinion anyways, Once the money is in your hands, the Rare, Scarce item is gone for good, never to be enjoyed ever again, only by the now owner, the cash is a fleeting commodity, anyone, and everyone has had some, nbut not everyone can say that they have owned, or are the proud owner of a piece of Movie History. I once had a gorgeous, Gem Cherry mint copy of the original "Greaser's Palace" on DVD, the old, original cardboard cover, snapper cased DVD, I eventually sold it for 10X what I paid for it, To this day, the money is long gone, and I'm so sorry, and I regret getting rid of that movie every day that I mess with my DVD Movie collection. Something to think about to every 'Collector' out there. And for less than a Yard price tag, I would of done much better, if I would have known that you had that piece of Phantasm 'magic'!

I'm inclined to agree with you, rpdevo-2. I'm not really a collector as such, but I do have a lot of things which I've owned for the better part of my life - including the original vinyl LP from Phantasm, which I bought, as another person mentioned, through Starlog many, many years ago. Of course it's been played countless times, so the sound quality is no longer what it once was. These days I simply like to display it (along with a lot of the other movie related stuff I've accumulated over the years), and content myself by listening to the soundtrack on CD. I'll never sell my stuff. Just having these things is what makes me happy.
