ME: Local drive in theater, original release (it was "scary summer" 1979 -- Alien, Dawn of the Dead, Night Wing, Prophecy and a few others) . LOVED IT!!!!!!!! I was so excited when it came to HBO in 1980!! Then countless VHS rentals.......from Mom & Pop video stores...........
I was 14 I stuck in to the drivein I had nightmares of the tall man for awhile. Just bough the the blu Ray and my young son which it with me in our home theater he liked it.
The first and ONLY time I saw it was on the CBS Late Night Movie in either winter or spring of 1981. Of course being that it was broadcast on network TV, most of the violence and frontal nudity was cut out. The scene where one of the Sentinel Spheres struck the Tall Man's assistant was heavily butchered, pun intended. All CBS would show was the ball hitting him on the head, then cut to him falling to the ground where all you see are his legs and feet. I knew right there that had to be a graphic scene because the jump from the guy with the ball on his head to him falling down was so abrupt.
I just watched it for the second time, this time on Blu-ray and jezz, that scene was so nasty!
One of the other posters here- asked what I saw this with at the drive in theater. It was "The Groove Tube" -- I believe. Back then drive ins did not give a crap what the second billed movie was. Often they did NOT match up .
I first rented it from Hollywood Video when I was 11 or 12 years old. I thought it was just okay then. I didn't hate it but I didn't think it was great either. About 3 or 4 years later I watched it again and I was amazed. I don't know what I missed the first time, but with the 2nd viewing it became a favorite and I've loved it ever since.
First time I even saw something of this movie I was a kid. It was just a portion of a scene. Can't remember what age though. It was in theaters at the time. My family and I drove to Houston, TX to visit relatives. It was at night, probably around midnight, maybe later, and my dad took a wrong turn. We had to drive back this long dark road and off in the distance I saw this drive in theater showing something. As we got closer, it was still off in the distance, I saw the scene of Mike being grabbed by that guy and the sphere smashing into his head. I didn't know what was going on. the last thing I remember seeing before my dad got off that road was when Mike and the Tall Man face each other.
Years later, I rented the movie and when that scene played I remembered it from that trip. I was like "so this is what they were watching at that drive in"!
^ around the same time, I was sick at home watching it on an old b&w tv and wondering if I was really watching a movie or having fever induced hallucinations lol
