John Savage's performance

I'm curious to know what people thought of his performance as Karl.
He has a bland style that fits certain roles right---good in Deer Hunter and Hair, not so good in The Amateur.

But in this movie, he baffled me. He was so aloof, even before the murder of his partner. I could not really feel his pain.

John Savage is definetly one of the most under-rated actors out there. He is great in this film...even better in Salvador. Anyone else think he looks a bit like Guy Pierce?

He is also ace in The Thin Red Line. I don't think he looks that much like Guy Pierce but perhaps they share the same dentist :-)

I've been in the group for years and I know, he always listens.

I thought John Savage gave a really fine and touching performance as Karl. The scene where he attempts to commit suicide is especially powerful. I actually broke out in a sweat watching that particular scene.

Look nonchalant and keep on smiling.

yeah i thought mr savage 'found' karl hettinger and really
gave a helluva performance

and im not even sure how much of a performance it was as
savage seems like that is how he is in real life
how would you describe it?
a little hesitant or just a bit 'off' from a regular joe

so many knockout takes by savage in this role
the gun in mouth of course was heartbreakingly tough

but another was hettinger in the hallway putting his badge on his belt
just before entering the roll call room to tell the uniforms how he effed up
he was still a cop but the unraveling had begun - an understated
but very powerful moment i thought very effective by savage

hettinger giving up his piece violated the cop code
a moment in time - a split second - and the man's life was forever
altered that is demolished

man everybody e-v-e-r-y-b-o-d-y effs up
if youre lucky nobody notices
if youre real lucky you get to make it right
if youre neither of those ... well you get to live with it

from what i read it sounds like karl hettinger got to visit hell
while he was still very much alive
here's hoping in eternity the guy gets a reprieve

Well said, onleft22-558-111411 ! God bless Karl Hettinger and may he find the peace as someone who protected others deserves.

I think it was a excellent performance. No histrionics. The way I feel cops act when something bothers them. I say that because my father was a Homicide Detective and he was a quiet man like Karl as was his other friends who were cops. I think he internalized a lot of the terrible things he saw. And I think that leads to many of them dying young of heart attacks and strokes. And a lot of them drinking. I think Savage should of gotten more accolades for his acting but it was not a flashy roles and Hollywood likes flash.

He was pretty good generally. I was thinking, however, if this guy has ever played a role in which he isn´t killed (Salvador, presumably The Thin Red Line), mutilated (The Deer Hunter) or doesn´t go insane (TTRL and here, too, almost).

I always like John Savage and surprised he did not have a bigger film career.

Its that man again!!

I have just seen this movie for the first time. I have always liked John Savage as an actor. He always brings something interesting and different to every role he plays.

Something struck me about his performance here. It's probably just me, but he had several mannerisms in this film that reminded me of Robert Duvall. The way he carried himself and some facial expressions he used.

Savage was unconvincing as a police officer prior to the shooting, but gave a good portrayal of a tortured man dealing with the aftermath of the shooting.
