poot?

this is one of my all time favorite movies since I was a kid. I understand from the context that mac davis uses it that poot must mean like "pal" or "buddy". I guess it's a term used in the southern part of the US. I'm from ny and have never hear of it outside of this movie. my question is does anyone know it's exact meaning and it's origin. thanks

Poot (both noun and verb) is a nice little kiddy word meaning "fart". That's just the QB's nickname for Nick Nolte's character...

“Poot” is what women do, as opposed to men, who FART.
Pretty good film, though. I'm not a huge sports fan (Other then UFC) But it's got great casting! Both Davis & Nolte are very believable as tough as nails football players...

Trust me,

so is it common for ppl in the south to call their friends fart(poot)? clearly it was a friendly term when seth called elliot that. I've also heard ron white use it in his stand up.

"everybody wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to die"

The answer is NO, we in the south do NOT use this term globally as a nickname. In this case it's just a nickname between two friends.

In my 5+ decades of living in the south I've never heard the word "poot" used other than as a kiddie euphemism for flatulence.

Well thanks for clearing that up. I was always curious about that, me and my cousin have been quoting a line mac davis said at the end of the film for years..."hey poot, you got any them ol' pain killers" I don't know why, it's just the way he said it. Now that I think about it, davis and nolte were ribbing each other throughout the film, so maybe "poot" is like calling him "old fart" in a joking way. Davis was such a natural in that film especially considering his limited exposure to acting, I'm surprised he didn't go on to become a working actor. He had great chemistry with Nick and the supporting performaces were great also. I really love this film. Entertaining and has a message without beating you over the head or being preachy. they don't make 'em like this anymore, I'm sorry to say

"everybody wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to die"

You are correct ben-thayer. I've lived in the South all my life and "poot" is just another name for fart. But I've never heard it used as a nickname in real life.

I have known guys nicknamed "scab" and another called "booger". I'd fight someone who tried to give me that nickname..

reply

"Poot" in this case is a combination of the word pooch, as in a pooch kick (a targeted kick, usually not kicked hard), and the word "football." It is thus entirely a football nickname, with a secondary facetious interpretation as a weak girly fart.
