Why is this not on DVD

Actually it is, but it is such a bad print that the transfer looks like it was copied from a pirate movie of the film. It was part of the Saturday night at the movies collection. And this particular DVD was a David Niven film with him on the DVD cover. I recently bought this on DVD for almost £20 pounds and was so disappointed with the copy. The thing is I had it on tape for ages when I taped it from TV and that was a better copy. What I'd like to see is a clear transfer of this film, because whenever it was shown on TV the print was very good. Ahh well, I guess one day it will come out on a better print. How this DVD company got the worst transfer of the film you could possibly imagine, is beyond me. Come on guys! Lets see this Brit gem on a decent DVD disk.

Did you buy this dvd from amazon .com?
I believe that its just released and i would like to know
If its in Widescreen?

reply

I bought it recently on DVD for a buck or two. Published by Geneon (geneon-ent.com). Not a great transfer & the RHS of the print has been cropped.

Joe, You should be happy to know a company called St. Clair Vision has released this gem along with 2 other David Niven films.('The Lady Says No' & the much better 'Happy Go Lovely' plus a TV show bonus from Four Star Playhouse titled 'The Bomb')Over 5-hours of David Niven fun for the rock bottom price of $3 !!! Late

I was glad for the DVD. This is a gem of a film. Niven is nicely wicked, Richard Jordan is too damned cute, and just writing this is making me smile. Got to watch it again soon.

I could be wrong but did this film not show on tv under a different title.
:THE BIGGEST BANK ROBBERY ?

reply

It had several titles for some reason. I wouldn't mind seeing it again - it makes me laugh just to remember it (not belly laugh but shaking of head laugh).

Having recently watched RAISE THE TITANIC i would say this was richard jordans
finest hour.Which isn,t saying much really.

reply

Richard Johnson as the detective is excellent as well. Davy Kaye is good but he is typecast for that role

Raise the Titanic had script issues - mainly it didn't have one, especially after the Pentagon got through with it. Too much effort into the tech, too little into the story, and ten rewrites only made it worse. But Jordan was a fine actor when he had a good script, IMO. See The Friends of Eddie Coyle or Gettysburg or Hunt for Red October or Interiors - all different characters from this film or Titanic or each other.

HMV are selling it in Oxford Street for £12.

I suspect there were changes of title because "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" was a terrible name for a contemporary robbery caper. It sounds instead like a romance from the 1940s. All the other titles I've heard for the film are awkward at best but at least they don't give a completely erroneous impression of what the film is about.
